Perhaps in response to some high profile solvency issues of late, SAAB made an effort to display its "real Saab EV product" on Wednesday in Trollhättan.

Still, no matter the reason they did decide to show it off, we are happy to see the first shots of the SAAB 9-3 EV - prototype or not.

In truth, the car shown is basically an 'electrified' Saab 9-3 Aero Sedan, but it does have all the batteries tucked under the floor...a welcome change to any conversion product.  (**cough*** are you listening Ford? ***cough***)

“We are happy to present the result of Nevs engineering into a real Saab EV product. The Saab cars’ well-known performance and safety is maintained and we foresee a very good product for the market.

When we developed the Saab 9-3 Aero Sedan Model Year 14, we focused on enhancing the driving experience, safety and quality. And the starting point for our development of the Electric Vehicle project was to maintain all the good attributes and characteristics ”, said Stig Nodin, Vice President Engineering and Product Development.

SAAB notes the following statistics on the car ("prototype series") shown today.

  • Range: approx. 200 km (120 miles)
  • 0-100 km/hr: 10 sec
  • Maximum speed: 120 km/h (75 mph)
  • Engine power 140 hp, 100 kW.
SAAB adds that the purpose of this vehicle was to "enhance the understanding of EV’s in the complete company" and to "serve as a reference for specification of coming production model(s)"

Production of the SAAB 9-3 EV is currently on indefinite hiatus as the NEVS (parent of SAAB) is looking to tie-up a deal reportedly with Dongfeng and Mahindra after plans to build 200 fully electric SAABs to the city of Qingdao never materialized.

NEVS, also some more pics are over at SAABSUnited that are worth a look. (hat tip to Nicholas and Steve)
