A group of students at the Eindhoven University of Technology and the Fontys University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands are developing a new plug-in hybrid race car called IM01 (InMotion 01).

This futuristic racer will have all-wheel drive thanks to four electric motors and an unusual range extender - a rotary engine, which will enable it to do the race not only on short distances on battery power, but also a 24-hour race like Le Mans. Engine efficiency at optimum speed could be 60%.

The other innovation will be cameras and displays instead of rear-view mirrors.

The team would like to race at 24 Hours of Le Mans with a Garage 56 entry in 2017 or 2018. The car should be ready by the end of 2015 and before French classic (LeMans), IM01 will try to break Stefan Bellof’s lap record of 6:11.13 on Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Eindhoven University of Technology students previously won the 2013 Cruiser class of the South Australian Motor Sport Board-organized World Solar Challenge.
