For over three years, Bosch and Volkswagen together with few other partners have been developing fully automated electric vehicles that will be able to make their way to charging stations or parking spaces under the V-Charge project.
"V-Charge is a collaborative research project being coordinated by ETH Zurich with contributions from the universities of Braunschweig, Oxford, and Parma together with Bosch and Volkswagen AG. The project is receiving funding from the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research (V-Charge, project number 269916) and has an overall budget of 5.63 million euros. It is set to run from June 1, 2011 to September 30, 2015."
The first application for such a system could be the valet parking at train stations and airports. However, we all know that without standardization of such a system (and wireless charging), this is in the distant future. Use in car sharing fleets could be interesting too.
From the driver's perspective, to control the car, all one needs is a smartphone with app.
