Audi A3 e-tron Interior
At the recent 2014 New York Auto Show, Audi made it official that the 5-door hatchback version of the A3 will come to the US in only two versions.
Those two versions are diesel (TDI) and plug-in hybrid.
It's Audi, so diesel is a given. However, the decision to drop gas engine options from the hatchback version of the A3 for the US market was unexpected.
Buyers looking for an A3 hatchback have two choices: diesel or PHEV.
Audi of America President Scott Keogh issued this statement:
“This new version has been one of our most requested models since the announcement of the new A3 family.”
By "new version," Keogh is referring to the hatchback, of which the plug-in hybrid version called the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron will be the first to go on sale in the US in early 2015. The TDI version will join the PHEV by Summer of 2015.
So, initial buyers of the Audi A3 hatchback will have but one choice: the plug-in version. That is, until the TDI model arrives several months later.
