Lightning Motorcycles announced that this weekend at the Quail Motorsport Gathering held in Carmel, California it will show off its all-new LS-218 electric Superbike.

For now, we have just this teaser, which was lightened a little bit below to show more detail.

LS-218 is the street-legal version of a racing motorcycle, which won several TTXGP/AMA/FIM races, 2013 Pikes Peak challenge and has a 215 mph land speed record (218 mph was the max in one of two runs).

"Lightning is excited to introduce the most technologically advanced and highest performing street-legal production motorcycle in the world — the Lightning Superbike LS-218!"

Richard Hatfield, CEO of Lightning Motorcycle stated:

“Since 2006 the Lightning team has been dedicated to developing electric motorcycles that meet and exceed the performance of the best ICE (Induction Combustion Engine) alternatives. To have broad acceptance from the motorcyclist community,we need to provide design, performance and value that competes head to head with the best gasoline motorcycles on the market. Lightning’s R&D team has developed electric vehicle technology through years of competition at racing events around the world. We believe that the LS-218 offers consumers the best of design, performance and value in today’s market.”

We found a funny glitch in the ICE description - “Induction Combustion Engine”, which should rather be Internal (let's leave induction for Tesla).

Lightning Superbike LS-218 has an IPM liquid cooled electric motor, which spin up to 10,500 rpm and put out power of 200 hp.  Peak torque is 168 ft/lbs. According to the press release, at highway speeds the motorcycle will go over 100 miles per charge on the standard battery pack, which is12 kWh. Interesting is that there are 15 and even 20 kWh options!

Charging time could be as low as 30 minutes from public fast charging stations. Without any details we think that LS-218 has combo inlet like previous prototypes.

Base price is $38,888.

Richard Hatfield added:

“Consumers no longer are required to pay more for less performance to support green technology. The Lightning LS-218′s can compete with the best ICE alternatives today. Lightning achieved the goal we set in 2009 to compete against and win against the best gasoline race bikes. In June 2013, at Pikes Peak, Lighting won first overall competing against 93 other motorcycle teams (electric and gasoline) by over 20 seconds.”

There are options of personalization like a fully programmable Android display, carbon fiber swingarm and frame, titanium fasteners, custom graphic wrap and seating.

Lightning Motorcycles encourages you to place reservations for VIN 0001. We thought that #0001 was already sold, but maybe the “mid-range model” is counted separately or something.

"Lightning is taking reservation right now. Reserve your own Lightning LS-218 today and be the first owner of LS-218 with VIN 0001!'
