By year's end, Vietnam will begin its first large-scale trial of electric vehicles.
Noi Bai Airport
The vehicles will be of the airport shuttle variety. They will be used exclusively at Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi to transport passengers and airline workers between termainlas T1 and T2.
The Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam is backing this trial in an effort to "curb illegal taxis and motorbike taxis that cheat and overcharge passengers," reports news organization Vietnam.
Some of the electric vehicles will could see use by security personnel too.
Noi Bai Airport has regulation on the types of vehicles allowed on airport grounds. Apparently, these electric vehicles will be granted exclusive rights in the area between terminals T1 and T2. The EVs will operate on behalf of the airport and therefore those "illegal taxis and motorbike taxis that cheat and overcharge passengers" will be pushed out of business.
As Vietnam reports, "there are 36 domestic and international airlines operating from and to the Noi Bai International Airport."
Between terminals T1 and T2, up to 21 million passengers will be served annually at the airport.
