Team USA has not won Olympic gold in bobsled since 1936.
BMW Carbon Fiber Found in Team USA Bobsleds
However, this year, USA has an ace up its sleeve that just might give the blobsled team a shot at taking home gold.
That ace comes courtesy of BMW and, more specifically, BMW i.
The same carbon fiber found in the BMW i3 and i8 form the basis for Team USA's bobsleds. This high-tech material if both lighter and stronger than the fiberglass used by Team USA at the last Winter Olympics.
As Tech News World claims:
"BMW's engineers provided adjustments to the sled's aerodynamics and weight distribution through included computer-aided modeling, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), full-size wind tunnel testing, on-track testing, and even athlete scanning."
Michael Scully, creative director of global design for BMW Group DesignworksUSA, told Tech News World:
"We were truly excited by the opportunity to work with the United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation and saw it as a natural fit to transfer our approach, technology, and design resources to the development of the two-man bobsled."
"The two-year development process in collaboration with Team USA has been an intense, exciting and rewarding one, and we're all looking forward to Sochi."
The Sochi bobsled competition starts on Sunday February 16.
