As Autocar reports, that patent sketch shows "a new-generation Audi all-wheel drive system which uses an electrically driven rear axle."

According to Autocar, Audi is working on some sort of "rapid-reacting" system that allows "brake regeneration forces to vary according to the road conditions."

It's not clear which vehicle Audi has in mind for this next-gen Quattro setup, but we're thinking something like this would be most beneficial on a crossover-ish plug-in hybrid.

It's clearly not a patent for a pure electric vehicle, as the sketch definitely shows an engine up front.

Autocar concludes that this patent could "result in the most intelligent and quickest-reacting all-wheel drive system yet."
