It's been discovered that the first-ever Porsche to have been built was actually the 1898 Egger-Lohner electric vehicle, C.2 Phaeton (more commonly referred to as P1 - Porsche #1).
This vehicle has supposedly just resurfaced in original and unrestored condition and will forever be on display at the Porsche Museum in Germany.
P1 was registered in Vienna, Austria on June 26, 1898.
Porsche says that the P1's specs were as follows:
- 3 hp electric motor - 5 hp bursts in overloading mode
- Electric motor weight of 287 pounds
- Top speed of 22 mph
- Range of up to 50 miles
- Transmission was a 12-speed setup
The P1 was put to the test in September of 1899 when it participated in an electric vehicle race of 25 miles in Berlin.
With three passengers on board, Porsche found Ferdinand Porsche crossed the finish line in the P1 a full 18 minutes ahead of the second place finisher. Most of the race entrants failed to finish either due to range limitation or vehicle breakdowns.
Porsche further claims that the P1 was by far the most efficient electric of its day.
This part of electric vehicle history is now back in its rightful place: on display in a museum for the entire world to see.
