FedEx announced this week that FedEx Express will be adding the first electric vans to its fleet in Brazil in January 2014. This will be the seventh FedEx fleet in the world to receive EVs.

As part of a collaboration with Renault, the Renault Kangoo Z.E. will be deployed in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. With a capacity of 1,433 lbs and a range of 120 km, the Kangoo has proven to be popular in Europe to date.
This is just the next step in FedEx's commitment to make its operations more environmentally sustainable. It already has 161 EVs in its fleets worldwide (in addition to hybrids) and the by the end of its fiscal year in May 2014, FedEx expects to have 222 EVs on the road.
Mike Murkowski, senior vice president of operations for South America at FedEx Express, had this to say about the milestone:
“We are celebrating the introduction of the electric vehicle in Brazil, which will provide us with an opportunity to assess the feasibility of this vehicle in this market, and is part of our efforts to find cleaner, more efficient transportation solutions. It is also an initiative that can encourage other companies to introduce this type of vehicle into its fleets.”
Well, we certainly hope so.
