The significant increase likely occurred for several reasons, but the primary pusher of sales is claimed to be Maryland's excise tax credit, which provides buyers of electric vehicles with $600 to $1,000 in credits.
Though not a huge amount of money, more than 1,700 resident of Maryland have claimed the credit, which went into effect in October 2010.
Montgomery County is Maryland's hotbed for electric vehicles with over 545 registered there alone. The county borders Washington, D.C., has a population of over 1 million and is considered one of the most affluent counties in the nation.
