VW's Plug-In Plans for the US Don't Include the XL1

Joerg Sommer is not one of the few well-known automotive execs.  He's largely flown under the radar, as do most higher-ups working at any of the German automakers.

However, Sommer is respected in the electric vehicle industry and is widely consider an expert in the field.

Sommer's previous positions include "head of electric mobility sales and marketing for Volkswagen Group. Before that he had a similar job at Renault," according to Automotive News.

Now, the electric vehicle expert has been put in charge (well, made vice-president) of product marketing and strategy for Volkswagen USA.

Sommer will assume this new role effective September 1.

It's believed that Sommer's electric vehicle background will be vital to the upcoming 2014 launch of the VW e-Golf in the US.  Other plug-in vehicles will follow, says Volkswagen, and it'll be Sommer's job to market those (and other more conventional VW offerings) to buyers in the US.
