Now here's a way to convince employees that going electric is the right financial choice: offer free charging and parking at the workplace.

That's precisely what PSEG is doing at its headquarters in Newark, New Jersey.

PSEG just opened what it says is the state's largest charging facility, but it's basically off-limits to the general public.

Instead, the 13 charging stations installed there will be free to use (through July 2016) for all employees.  Technically, 2 of the charging stations will be set aside for company vehicles, but the other 11 will be reserved for employee-use only.

Additionally, PSEG is offering free parking at its Newark site to employees that own electric vehicles.  Oddly, it's not usually free to park, at least for some employees, at PSEG sites.

The addition of these 13 chargers (which are considered public, though they probably shouldn't be) brings the total in New Jersey to 90, which is way shy of what's needed in the state and still far behind neighboring states like New York (218 public chargers) and Pennsylvania (119 public chargers).

We'd bet that utility company PSEG will soon see several of its employees showing up in electric vehicles simply for the benefits of free charging/parking.

PSEG today opened what it called the largest electric car-charging facility in the state at its Newark headquarters garage, available to its employees.

New Jersey's largest utility company said the opening of the 13 charging stations coincides with the beginning of a new company incentive program urging employees to use electric cars. Those who participate will receive access to no-cost charging through July 2016, and those in Newark will receive free company parking for the same time period.

The incentive program is available for employees in Newark, at the company's training center in Edison and at its energy and environment resource center in Salem. Eleven of the charging stations are for employees, and two will be reserved for company cars.
