Completed 2013 Nissan LEAF in Tennessee...Will Brazil be Next to Manufacture the LEAF
There's Tennessee, Japan, the UK and soon maybe even Brazil.
The Nissan LEAF is currently built on 3 continents, but it seems Nissan is considering adding one more: South America.
Nissan signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Rio de Janeiro State Government (and some other groups we won't bother to list here) to "accelerate zero-emission transportation" in Brazil.
Under the MoU, Nissan is open to the possibility of manufacturing future electric vehicles somewhere in Brazil. It's only a possibility and, seems unlikely, but you never know with Nissan, an automaker that seems set on leading the world in the EV race.
First, Nissan hopes to establish a charging infrastructure in Brazil and to promote electric vehicles there. It's doing that right now with a pilot program of LEAF taxis in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro
Then, if EV sales take off anywhere in South America, Nissan will consider localizing production.
It's probably a stretch to think that Nissan will someday build LEAFs in South America, but you can never know what the future holds.
