Earlier this month, Chinese company BYD delivered the first electric K9 bus to coach operator Buquebus  in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay.

This initial K9 electric bus will be used to transport tourists around the area.

Soon, hundreds of additional electric buses will arrive and those unit will enter Uruguay's public transport system.

All told, some 500-plus electric buses will be deployed in Uruguay by the end of 2015.  If that 500-unit mark is met, Uruguay could become home to the world's largest EV bus project outside of China.

"By 2015 it is expected that more than 500 BYD electric buses will be running on the streets and roads of Uruguay, generating significant environmental impact."

Below is a short video shot in Europe, which compare how quiet a BYD electric bus is versus a conventional diesel one.
