Bosch Supplies Vital Components for the Fiat 500e

Automotive parts supplier Robert Bosch GmbH is big on electric vehicles and their related technology.  Well, Bosch is actually quite big on all things automotive, but that's besides the point.  Bosch has its hands in several electric vehicles, most notably the Fiat 500e.

So, with Bosch's obvious devotion to electric vehicle technology, when Dr. Volkmar Denner, Bosch's chairman of the board of management, speaks, we should probably listen.

At a panel discussion on the topic of "research and development perspectives in electromobility," Dr. Denner stated that he expects that, come 2020, electric vehicles will have a range of at least 186 miles.

Denner is not talking about exotic electric vehicles or high-priced autos.  Quoting Denner:

"Electromobility is currently still a niche business, but after 2020 it could very well become a mass market."

Notice the "mass market" mention?  Denner is thus saying that affordable, everyday electric vehicles will have a minimum range of 186 miles by 2020.  This seems a reasonable goal to us.

Yes, Bosch has a reason for standing behind EV technology and for boasting over future targets, as it currently invests some $514 million annually in electromobility research and development.  So, we wouldn't expect Bosch to says that EVs will fail or that range, a limiting factor for sales today, won't be extended significantly in the coming years.
