Tesla Begins Certified Pre-Owned Sales Online
With Tesla having promoted a Roadster trade-in/buyback program available against upgrading to a new Model S, and having already sold over 6,000 copies of their new electric sedan, it stands to reason that the company is starting to acquire quite a little stable of it's original offering...and that they might need somewhere to show them off.

Starting this past Friday, Tesla now proudly lists Roadsters the company has available for sale. Pricing ranges from $66,100 all the way up to $127,400 for a custom Roadster Sport.
At the time of the buyback program's launch in October of 2012, Tesla estimated that a current Roadster owner could get about $73,300 for a 4 year old Roadster with 31,000 miles, and $93,500 for a 2010 Roadster with 2,900 miles.
A quick check of the website, shows that Tesla is not marking the cars up a great deal, as a 2009 Roadster with 12,000 miles is currently going for $85,500.
Of course compared to private deals, and ones through normal vehicle re-sellers, Tesla's prices seem a touch high (by a good 20% in our estimation). But the question really is, "Are people really willing to pay $20,000-$30,000 more for an old Roadster over a new 85 kWh Model S?"
It seems to us that new innovation should lessen the value of the old, and we expect to see a lot of used Roadster inventory coming online as Tesla works through their 20,000 deep reservation backlog on the Model S.
Tesla does 'value-add the proposition' with some incentives in hopes to sway consumers from private and 3rd party sellers, like those that can be found at Cars.com:
Every certified pre-owned Roadster undergoes a 214-point inspection by our technicians to ensure that it's in like-new condition. This inspection includes all drive-related, appearance, and safety components.
