Sometime in 2014 the Porsche Cayenne SUV will get a mid-generational face-lift, and atthe same time will also receive a new hybrid drivetrain capable of propelling the big SEV all-electrically. Porsche calls this the e-Hybrid.
A Look Inside The Cayenne S Hybrid
The Cayenne e-Hybrid plug-in will basically have the same set-up, internal combustion engine as the Cayenne Hybrid on the road today, but with and upgraded onboard lithium battery and electric motor output.
In a report by Motor Trend they feel the Porsche's electric motor will be upgraded to produce around 95 to 100 horsepower, which will enable the SUV to be driven without assistance from the V-6 engine. This electric motor is positioned between the engine and transmission, so the Cayenne e-Hyrbid will be 4WD even in electric mode.
The Porsche engineer Motor Trend spoke with would not say exaclty how much electric-only range the Cayenne will have, but ballpark estimates put the range above/about 15 miles. The e-Hybrid will be electrically powered by a 10 kwH lithium battery.
The current Cayenne S Hybrid Gets 21 MPG (20 city/24 highway), which is fairly impressive considering that the hefty SUV (5,000lbs) has almost 400hp and zips to 60mph in 6.5 seconds.
