Mercedes SLS AMG Electric Drive 0-62 mph in 3.9 Seconds
Mercedes has debuted it electric supercar, now officially known as the SLS AMG Couple Electric Drive, in Paris today, and the company had some surprises in store.
No Car Is Complete Without Its "EV Badge"
The company is promoting this as "the most powerful production EV in the world," and the competition is not even close. Spy shots of the car had surfaced last week, and it was thought the electric Mercedes would have about 525 hp and 650 pounds-feet of torque. Not even close it turns out.
In fact the Electric Drive version of the SLS AMP Couple puts out more power than its petrol sibling, as Daimler states from Paris that the wheels are driven by four synchronous electric motors putting out 740 hp (551 kW) and 738 lb-ft (999 Nm) of torque. That is 177 hp/259 lb-ft more than the V8 6.2-liter engine in the "regular" SLS AMG. The four motors also make it a four-wheel drive car.

To get that power to the road the electric Mercedes has been fitted with two gearboxes that provide direct drive to each axle, while the Torque Dynamics system provides selective drive to individual wheels, based on road conditions. The system has three modes: comfort, sport and sport plus.

As noted in the specs, the battery is very large, and very heavy; not really the ideal setup for a supercar, so Mercedes has worked at lowering the overall weight by scrapping the "regular" model's all aluminum underpinnings, and instead went for a aluminum/carbon fiber setup. They also have fitted the electric drive with carbon-ceramic brake discs (402mm front, 360 mm back). This is a brake job you should not look forward too.
The SLS AMG Electric Drive has exclusive to Mercedes, 19-inch alloy wheels with 265/35 tires at the front and 20-inch alloy wheels with 295/30 tires in the rear.
As for pricing, in Germany the car has a sticker of 416,500 euros when it goes on sale early in 2013, which translates to about $540,000 US dollars, so Mercedes can claim to be king of two things. Most powerful production EV, and most expensive.
