After only selling 16 fully electric Fits in the car's first two months on the market, Honda may have found its niche (and some good advertising) in companies like Zipcar, who share electric cars amongst its users for a fee.
"Zipcar, Inc., the world's leading car sharing network, and American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today announced the introduction of 2013 Honda Fit EV battery electric vehicles (BEV) into the Zipcar fleet, starting in San Francisco."
As a "celebration" of Fit EVs into Zipcar's San Francisco fleet, the two companies will be offering demonstrations and test drives of the new Honda at the Justin Herman Plaza in San Francisco on September 17 and 18, 2012. So if you don't feel like signing up to rent the car for a day, this event is both free and open to the public.
The new Honda Fit EVs will be placed in Zipcar locations throughout San Francisco this month, including the InterContinental Hotel, Parc 55 (near the Powell St. BART) and City Hall at 34 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place. These vehicles will be available for hourly reservation by all Zipcar members, starting from just $8.00 per hour.
"The introduction of the Honda Fit EVs into the Zipcar fleet allows our members to drive one of the most technologically-advanced vehicles on the road while reducing environmental impact," said Mark Norman, Zipcar president and COO. "These vehicles add to the selection of smart and sustainable options Zipcar currently offers, and will help increase overall awareness of an exciting new technology in a vehicle we know our members will love."
Move Over Prius, Zipcar Has A New-Greener, Poster Child
Honda's 2013 Fit EV, has received the highest MPGe rating given out by the EPA to date at 118 MPGe. This rating, in conjunction with its 20 kWh Lithium-Ion battery, gives the car a 82 mile range. Honda says they will only build 1,300 copies of the Fit EV (1,100 for the US), and is available only as a lease at $389 month. (Full review can be found here)
Not in San Francisco? Zipcar and Honda will eventually also add Fit EV vehicles to Zipcar fleets in Los Angeles and Portland (OR), sometime in the fall. The Massachusetts-based company also has plans to add a further 30 cars over the next 18 months.
