Because it’s the New Year, we’re inclined to spread the cheer today by putting forth some light-hearted, positive plug-in vehicle posts.

With that in mind, we present to you the 2018 EV goal for the state of New York

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) recently partnered with ChargePoint and utility National Grid to get 3,000 public and workplace chargers in the ground by 2018.

Additionally, the state of New York aims to have 40,000 plug ins on its roads by 2018.  Today, only ~4,000 plug-ins are registered statewide.

Both the charging effort and the goal to increase EV uptake are part  of a $50 million investment put forth by the Governor of New York.  The $50 million will be doled out over the next 5 years.

40,000 plug ins is certainly a lofty figure, but New York’s push doesn’t end there.  By 2025, the state’s goal is 1 million plug ins on its roads!!!

Is there new news here? This sounds like the plans announced months ago…

2018 is a long way off. NY State is way behind in EV infrastructure. The NY State Thruway is a limited access toll road that runs across the entire state from Buffalo to NY City via Albany. Going north from Albany to Montreal, Canada, there is the Adirondack Northway. From near Albany to Binghamton, there is Interstate 88. This is where most of the long distance travel takes place in the state. There are no Level 3 chargers anywhere along these routes, and Level 2 charging in nearby communities is so sparse you couldn’t make it across the state with an EV. When NY State and NYSERDA get serious about charging infrastructure, they will announce Level 3 chargers specifically on these major transportation routes. This, unfortunately, is a business as usual announcement in NY State with no clear vision to impact EV transportation.

Putting all eggs in one basket?! Why not selecting two charging networks, like SemaConnect or WattStation Connect?

When I see it, I will believe it. So far, very little progress if any has been made since this was announced. The majority of EV charging stations are located in parking garages and hotels in Manhattan, where it costs $3/hr for L2 and $50 to park. Some people report being charged $10/$20 for L1 when Plugshare lists the location as L2, bait and switch. If you don’t believe me, check it out, the stations are covered in dust and crap because very few people use them. The ones in Queens and Brooklyn are located where people rarely go to, makes no sense. New York won’t get it, but it’s good PR to say they will do it. Highly doubt there will ever be on-the-street EV charging, as the current lack of parking means it will be ICE’d regularly.
