EagleAID revealed that in August, all-electric car sales in Western Europe surged by some 50% from 4,045 year ago to nearly 6,000.

That’s a good sign (+2,000), especially since in countries like France, August still was a slow month.

Western Europe BEV sales in August:
nearly 6,000 (0.85% market share)

Through the first eight months of 2015, sales went up to nearly 54,000 (up by 53.1% year-over-year) and that’s not including any plug-in hybrids or range-extended EVs.

Of course, with 0.85% market share in August, EagleAID is far from satisfied.

There is also a reference to Diesel Gate and the possibility that it could trigger more EV launches from VW:

Half of the cars in the EU are DIESEL!

You guys are always unnecessarily critical of Eagle Aid.

A quick check shows Eagle Aid with Headlines such as “Tesla Model S captures July’s West European electric car sales crown by narrow margin”


“Switzerland’s rich dump conventional luxury saloons for Tesla’s Model S”

With this comment found at

Hmmm, well to nit-pick, the Model S is Tesla’s second “attempt”, if that’s the right word for a car which is so very clearly a huge success. The first “attempt” was the Roadster, which wasn’t so successful for Tesla financially, but received nearly as much praise from the press.

I for one will cheer the almost 1,5% plug-in sales in (western) Europe in August.

Now we just need a push through toward early adopters and mainstream buyers and not just pioneers.
And also a big push from underperforming (compared to what you expect from them) countries (and their car industries) like Germany and Sweden.

Volvo have some good phev’s on the way.

Germany is tougher nut to crack, but those OEMs too have time line for transition to phev’s. Disel troubles may not speed things up but they surely add definitiveness to deadlines.

Excellent! If we have a 50% increase every year it won’t take long to replace the fossil fleet!

Then western Europe could almost do it by 2035. Last part is always hard though so don’t count on it before 2040. And that is still assuming everything goes well and might include a lot of PHEVs (but biofuels could make up the rest then).

I think it will go much faster than that. Once EVs are good enough, charging infrastructure is good enough and there is a wide variety of EVs to choose from people will dump fossil cars en masse.

You were the one saying 50% increase per year. I was just calculating how long it would take then. 😉

When can we have world wide data?

Curently *EVs are mostly constrained by Li-on production, so global data would be good indication of how fast Li-on production grow.
