What used to be “National Plug In Day” has now been transformed into “National Drive Electric Week” as the event enters its fourth year.

Started in 2011 as a day in September to promote plug-in vehicles and heighten people’s awareness on the benefits of driving on electricity via simultaneous events across the country, has now grown into a week long event.

At last year’s event more than 36,000 attendees took part in the special day across 98 cities with almost 3,000 electric vehicles being shown off over the course of the day, along with thousands of test drives.

Thanks to this year’s expanded schedule organized by Plug In America, the Sierra Club and the Electric Auto Association, 2013 participation numbers will easily be surpassed.

“We’ve expanded our celebration from a day to a week to reflect the growing popularity of electric cars, which offer Americans more fun, more choice, fewer hassles and great savings,” said Plug In America president Richard Kelly.

“The one thing we want everyone to know is that you don’t have to have an electric car to take part in National Drive Electric Week. That’s the point–to introduce EVs to prospective buyers who haven’t experienced the thrill of instant torque and a quiet, clean ride, right past the gas station.”

National Drive Electric Week activities will vary by city.  But in addition to test drives, they are expected to include EV drag races and rallies, charging infrastructure demos, awards and more.

The organizers also noted:

Sales of electric cars, which can be charged at home while you sleep or at work, have doubled every year for the past three years. National Drive Electric Week’s organizers are seeking to champion and sustain that explosive growth rate. As in previous years, they expect events from Hawaii to Maine to offer ride-n-drives of every electric or hybrid electric vehicle on the road:

Tesla Model S, Nissan LEAF, Chevy Volt, Chevy Spark EV, Mitsubishi iMiEV, BMW i3, Cadillac ELR, Fiat 500e, smart ED, Mercedes B-Class Electric Drive, Toyota Prius PHV, Ford Focus EV, Honda Fit EV, Honda Accord PHEV, CMax energi, Ford Fusion Energi PHEV, Porsche Panamera PHEV and Zero and Brammo motorcycles.

As we get closer to the event we will highlight the upcoming events across the country.  It should be a fun week!

Why the name change?

Maybe the upcoming wireless charging systems will make the term plug-in outdated?

Probably because “national plug in day” does not communicate to the unacquainted that it is about driving electric cars.

“Sure, I’ll plug in my cell phone and my toaster, why do I need a day to celebrate that?” 😉

Because pluging in isn’t the fun part about EVs, and to the uninitiated, it seems like a chore. Driving electric is what’s great about EVs. And the event is really about giving people a chance to test drive an EV, the opportunity to Drive Electric.

Need one of these in the NW, Seattle North, new Volt, love my plug in…

Great to see Plug in America expand the celebration.

If you can’t wait until September to drive a half dozen different electric cars in a single afternoon, check out the Electric Car Guest Drive in California this month.

But the lap top load is drawing to europe, UNPLUGGED project aims to investigate how the use of inductive charging of Electric Vehicles (EV) in urban environments improves the convenience and sustainability of car-based mobility. Check more about this project.

I bought my Volt in September 2013 and missed the event because I was unaware of it. Naperville is near me and hosted last year’s event, but there is no event listed for Illinois at all in 2014.

You can always organize an event in your city and add it to the list of events! Get a few like-minded electric drivers together in a downtown parking lot or similar. If it goes well, the next year will be even bigger!
