Speculation on the electric MorganĀ 3 Wheeler eight months ago proved to be true.

Morgan announced in June the EV3, a pure electric version of its hot seller, which is currently undertaking a full testing and development program.

Morgan Motor Company expects to begin sales in 2016.

The EV3 will get 45 kW of power at the rear wheel. The target range stands at 150 miles (240 km).

Pretty cool thing is that weight will be lower than the standard 3 Wheeler.

“The Morgan EV3 concept is the second full electric vehicle produced by the Morgan Motor Company. Following the Plus E, the EV3 is based on the standard Morgan 3 Wheeler that was reintroduced back in 2011. Bespoke to order, hand crafted and most of all fun, the EV3 looks at the world of zero emissions motoring with an entirely new approach. Morgan is excited to announce that this prototype version is currently undertaking a full testing and development programme and is expected to go into production towards the end of 2016. A single rear electric motor provides 45kw of power and the overall weight is less than its combustion based counterpart at 450kg. Range is expected to be approximately 150 miles.”

Prototype was presented at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and we collected photos to show:

“Debuting at the Festival of Speed, the Morgan EV3 electric 3 Wheeler prototype provided a point of interest and keen conversation at the show. Displayed on the Niche Vehicle Network stand, the EV3 prototype is currently in the first of three phases of development. The next phase will see a small run of production vehicles go into build, all of which will benefit from a restyled front and new wheels.”

If you are curious about the earlier Plus E model from 2012 developed by Morgan, we also found it. Sadly this one didn’t make it to production.

Hmm. No rapid charger? Not even limited to 20kWh? Something like that should be considered as vital by now.

I hope when the production version is ready, they’ll add detail that should make it fit with the brand’s image. The box where the engine should be, the plastic steering wheel, it all looks a bit compliance-like and any reviewer can single these things out to make the electric version look like it has no value.

It doesn’t need quick charging this is not a daily driver.

Bill

How far, exactly, do you think you’d drive this machine??
Take it on a 50-60mi cruise then go back home and plug it in.

Vinny

This won’t win any races with only a 45 kW motor. A Zero SR motorcyle has a 50 kW motor and a lot less weight.

Bill

It’ll win races against other Morgan 3-wheelers…

This is possibly the most niche of any niche production car I’ve ever seen!

Morgan produced several models of three-wheel roadster-cum-race cars between WW I and WW II, as you can see in the photo link below.

But really, what is the market for an EV styled after cars that are this deeply retro?

The original made the engine a key element of the visual aesthetic of the car, why not do the same with the electric motor?? Put it right out there for all the world to see!

Yeah, the front is a bit lacking. Put the motor outside, and you have room for more batteries or add DCFC support.

I do love deeply retro-styled EVs, but the Plus E would have been a more practical vehicle to own.
