More Details On Range Rover’s Upcoming PHEV


Jaguar Land Rover is in the final stages of production development for its first plug-in hybrid Range Rover, that is scheduled for the 2018 model year.

According to Autocar, which again recently spotted the prototype out testing, the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport PHEV are to be equipped with a:

  • 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol engine: 295bhp and 295lb ft of torque
  • eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox
  • in-house Electric Drive Module (EDM): 201bhp and 332lb ft
  • a lithium-ion battery good for up to 30 miles (48 km)

The Range Rover PHEV’s closest competitor will likely be the plug-in hybrid BMW X5 xDrive40, but in this case the Range Rover PHEV is going a bit robust with electrification, and will have more electric power and range.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain is also to be later utilized in the Jaguar F-Pace, XF and XJ, better enabling an average CO2 emission reduction for the company.

Perhaps we will learn even more in a few days at the 2017 IAA in Germany, as many plug-in vehicles are set to make their debuts.

A real PHEV SUV, how cool is this. 30 miles AER as well … very nice. Any word on what the gas mpg will be in hybrid mode?

Well…it’s a start!

This story failed to mention it, but I would guess it will be some for of 4 wheel drive, right?

Progress. Any word on what markets it will be sold in?

Is it coming to the US and if so, when? Can’t imagine it wouldn’t…

It will be interesting to see where it is launched first. I believe Rangies are very popular in California and it’s a ZEV state. After that maybe the UK. When the XJ has been PHEV’d it will be interesting to see how soon the UK Government starts to buy them. Prince Charles might get a PHEV Rangie too.

Is that 30 miles of range in the European or U.S. cycle?

As a side note, it looks like the 2018 XC90 and XC60 T8 fuel economy numbers are up on Oddly, they list the larger XC90 with 19 miles of range and the smaller XC60 with 18 miles (not sure if that is accurate or if they are rversed on the site…it may be the XC60 software is tapping the motor for more aggressive performance…not sure).

I noticed that too. And in mpg for hybrid mode is better for XC90. Doesn’t seem right.

Expect we’ll see a lot of these in Colorado

Please, let this be an actual 30 miles of EV range, and not “30 miles IF the climate control is off and IF you don’t touch the gas pedal, and IF it’s above 68 degrees and IF it’s below 70 degrees and IF you don’t go up any hills…”
