Mitsubishi Motorswill use the floor of the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show in late November (Nov. 20) to debut 3 new hybrid concepts.

(We’ll focus on only 2 of the 3, since the 3rd is one of those no-plug hybrids)

First up is the Mitsubishi Concept GC-PHEV.  The automaker describes this one as follows:

“Concept GC-PHEV is a next-generation full-size SUV with full-time 4WD. It is based on a front engine, rear-wheel drive layout plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) system comprising a 3.0-liter V6 supercharged MIVEC 4 engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, with a high-output motor and a high-capacity battery to deliver all-terrain performance truly worthy of an all-round SUV.”

Next, we’ve got the Concept XR-PHEV, which Mitsubishi details like this:

Concept XR

“The MITSUBISHI Concept XR-PHEV5 is a next-generation compact SUV developed to take driving pleasure to new levels. The MITSUBISHI Concept XR-PHEV uses a front engine, front-wheel drive layout PHEV system that is configured with a downsized 1.1-liter direct-injection turbocharged MIVEC engine, a lightweight, compact and high-efficiency motor with a high-capacity battery.”

As is obvious from the images, Mitsubishi is taking some Outlander PHEV design cues (along with its huge sales success) to widen its lineup of PHEV offerings.

At this point in time, both vehicles are nothing more than concepts.  However, Mitsubishi does say this:

“These two concepts feature PHEV systems optimally tailored to different market and segment requirements.”

So, maybe there’s hope that one of even both of these vehicles will eventually be sold in certain markets across the globe.

I really, really like the look of all of them, honestly I do but the Concept XR-PHEV’s chrome fascia makes it look like a clown! Still good. Unfortunately, I was hoping for a resurrection of the Eclipse.

It is encouraging to see Mitsubishi interested in producing more PHEVs, but I really wish they would repurpose that effort into ramping up their current PHEV and getting it delivered to the US.

Stop teasing, and making it happen.

We need the Outlander PHEV here (US) NOW….

I’m not an SUV fan but that cherry red XR is seeexxxy!

Come on now!
Let’s stop making these things look like clown cars!!

My concern is with pricing of the Outlander PHEV at $57k (USD) in Germany, what would something the size of the GC be at???
