Mitsubishi Sold Almost 20,000 Outlander PHEVs In Europe In 2014

Mitsubishi Outlander GX5 PHEV

Sales of Mitsubishi cars in Europe continued to grow in 2014 to almost 137,000 (up 28% year-over-year).

One of the most important models on the market for Mitsubishi is of course the Outlander (sales reached 38,617 last year).

Of those, nearly 52% (19,980) were plug-in hybrid Outlander PHEVs. This is by far the highest sales number that we’ve ever seen for a single plug-in car model in one year in Europe – over 5,000 above the second best Nissan LEAF.

In 2013, Mitsubishi sold 8,197 Outlander PHEVs, so a total of 28,177 were delivered (through December 2014) in some 15-months since it went on sale in Europe.

While in 2013 almost all (8,009) Outlander PHEVs went to the Netherlands, last year’s sales were more diversified:

By country

  • Netherlands: 7,666
  • UK: 5,370
  • Sweden: 2,289
  • Norway: 1,485
  • Germany: 1,060
  • other countries 2,110

Interesting that we aren’t hearing anything about an upcoming US release date.

Wonder if they’ll get it here before the 2016 Volt? The Model X

I still think they severely erred by ignoring one of the most important markets on Earth, especially given American desires for SUVs and CUVs.

Last year I was dead set on buying the Outlander PHEV.

    Now I’m not so sure.
I really would love an AWD vehicle

But the limited AER of the PHEV is disappointing and there is a glitch in the 2015 winter function causing the PHEV to run 100% on ICE even with a full battery.

Given the drastic improvement in the Volt it will be hard to take the Outlander unless Mitsubishi gets its act together

That said, can’t GM see what is happening in Europe? Why haven’t they announced a Voltec CUV?

I presume their margin is far higher in Europe.

Also, in Europe the Mitsubishi brand has a better image and footprint than in the US.

Surely now with low gas prices that’s hitting the softer PHEV segment of EV sales, I see even less incentive for Mitsubishi to bring that beast over here.

They were battery supply constrained. Apparently they still are but less so.
Model X: I am banking on Sep 20th, as Musk says it will be out this Summer, though Tesla officially says Q3, which could be as late as Sep 30th.

Have just ordered our PHEV this morning here in the UK.

Test drive was very smooth and decent pick up for a car that weighs 2 tons ! Pretty quiet too, especially in pure electric.

Have been told I should expect around 60mpg although some have said low 50’s and others high 70’s so will be interesting to see what I can get using the regen brakes etc.

It’s either the new Volt or new Outlander for me. I think the Outlander PHEV will sell well in the US if they can deliver within the next 12 months. The Volts biggest weakness which they did not address is a relatively cramped interior.

Still waiting for the Subaru PHEV

52% that’s pretty good for a top end model, hopefully this means we’ll get a whole heap of other Mitsubishi models along these lines

  6. Joe says:

I quess, I need to review more information but I don’t see why this vehicle is selling so well?
