Mitsubishi President: Pajero / Montero Plug-In Hybrid Likely Coming to US in 2015

We’d hinted at this awhile back, but now Mitsubishi President Osamu Masuko has chimed in with his take.

In speaking with Automotive News, Masuko stated:

“We have the plug-in version of the Outlander and a plug-in version of the Outlander Sport, as shown at the Tokyo Motor Show. There will also be a plug-in Pajero. They aren’t stand-alones. Within a nameplate, you will have a gasoline version, the plug-in, maybe a diesel.”

“One thing I can say for sure is that the plug-in hybrid market will grow. U.S. CAFE standards are becoming more stringent, so you need vehicles like plug-ins to satisfy them.”

Masuko confirms that a plug-in hybrid Pajero is coming, but will it be US-bound?

“We would like to bring [to the US] the next-generation version that we are developing, partly because it will have a plug-in hybrid version.”

Automotive News then asked “And you want to bring the plug-in version?”

To which Masuko responded:

“That’s right. A plug-in hybrid Pajero.”

The US hasn’t seen the Pajero (known stateside as the Montero) since 2006.  It remains unclear if the US version will be called the Pajero or the Montero this time around, but we expect to see it (as well as the PHEV version) on US shores perhaps as early as 2015.

The plug-in version of the Pajero will likely utilize the drivetrain bits found in the Mitsubishi Concept GC-PHEV, a vehicle the automaker unveiled at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show.

The Concept GC-PHEV is a full-size SUV with full-time 4WD.

The GC-PHEV’s powertrain consists of a 335 hp (250 kW) supercharged 3.0-liter V6 gas engine, along with a 70kW electric motor and a 12 kWh battery installed under the floor.  Range is quote by the automaker at 25 miles.

The 2015 question is how will the Pajero price vs. a Model X? (factoring in gas for that 335 HP V6)

Where do they end up with coming in 2015 from the interview?

President says “bring the next generation” to the US ?

it will be 2016 at soonest I bet

Typically, I hate when people say that cars are “ugly” and they wouldn’t buy one, because we need to starting viewing them more for function rather than aesthetics. They get you from point A to B, don’t be so vain.

That being said, That is one BUFUGLY car.

Hopefully it looks more like a bigger Outlander than this monstrosity.

I will gladly sell you PHEV SUV someday in the future
