Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is coming to Australia and the Japanese company happily presents testimonials in this new video.

Automotive journalists in Australia commented that Outlander PHEV is:

  • the most efficient SUV on the Australian market by a long shot,
  • the most technologically progressive SUV on the market,
  • the most practical petrol-electric hybrid to go on sale in Australia

To own such an appreciated SUV in Australia, you just need to have at least $49,990 (or $44,000 USD).  For that sum, you can go about 22 miles (EPA estimate) on pure electricity before the ICE kicks in.

Well, that’s not a bad price at all compared to the Holden Volt, which was priced at more than $60,000 at introduction.

    The Outlander PHEV is a change from standard SUV but it should have had 80 miles ev range and made on a 4WD ev basis with a rex, that would have made it way more desirable and actually cheaper and more efficient as well.

      We do 250 km a week with only long trips coming during holidays. So a 50 km electric SUV would mean filling up 4-5 times a year and a serious space up grade from our yaris.

      Why 80 miles? Most PHEVs in production have between 20 to 40 miles and do just fine for what they are intended.

        IMO it’s because many PHEV buyers would like a BEV, but have lifestyles that don’t allow a restrictive 80-90 mile BEV, can’t afford a $70-120k Tesla, and thus look to the PHEV market to give them an “almost always” BEV experience with the ICE to be used as a backup.

        We’re not buying these cars to use gas. We’re buying them to go electric. I understand why PHEV makers have targeted 25 mile AER, but I think they’re wrong.

        Arguably, the #1 request from Chevy Volt owners is more range, and it gets 40 miles or so.

        Take me:
        My daily commute is 23 miles round trip (no work charging available). That eats all of the Outlander’s range. In winter, my commute is longer than the Outlander’s range.

        So I have to burn gas every day in the winter. Urgh.
        only 51% of Americans have a round trip commute less than 20 miles. So I’m not alone.

        Also, it’s cheaper for many of us to charge at night. In Minneapolis, it’s 1.92 cents per kWh at night, and 16 cents during the day. Thus, I’d rather just charge once at night.

        A 40 mile range would mean that I could at least be basically all-electric for my daily commute and I’d only burn gas for rare errands done on work days. I’d probably be 95+ electric.
        A 60-80 mile range would put me at 99.9% electric.

        I personally would buy a 120 mile AER AWD BEV over any PHEV, since I almost never drive more than 80 miles in a day and we have a second car and I’d be willing to make adjustments for those rare days.

        But there aren’t any 120 mile BEVs (except RAV4 not sold here). And until now there have been no AWD anythings.

        It would be nice if a car would come out with multiple AERs. For instance, an Outlander with ability to choose 20, 40, or 60 mile AERs. I think many would choose the 60 mile AER, just like how most Tesla buyers choose the P85 and not the P60 or P40.

        So to answer your question, people want more range because we bought electric to drive electric!

          Then then they are going to have to wait for more energy dense and cheaper batteries.

          Wanting something doesn’t mean it is feasible, technically or financially.

          So you burn some gas every day in winter.
          That means that half the year you probably won’t burn any and will only burn fairly small amounts when you do use it.

          In fact, from an economic return viewpoint, it means the battery is darn near optimum size.

          ‘Wanting’ something is all very well.
          The assumption is that the bigger battery comes at the same price.

          It doesn’t, so folk should get over it and move on.

          JRMW explained very precisely the reason for 80 miles ev range and Davemart also in the sense that 80 miles is indeed technically and financially doable. So 80 miles plus a rex is a winning combination.

            That is called a BMW i3.

            And there is never one optimum.

            If you do frequent long journeys then the Rex on the BMW is not going to cut the mustard.

            If you only travel less than 20 miles almost all the time, why would you want to pay for 80 miles of AER?

            There are whole set of optimums, depending on usage and battery cost at any particular point in time, amongst other things.

              The i3 shows that an 80 mile REx can be made. It pushed the envelope. I think it is awesome

              But its RWD status immediately excludes it from many markets

              maybe the outlander and Tesla’s announcement will spur BMW to make an AWD i3

    It’s not coming it’s here already, there’s one at work and I have seen 3 at a dealership (Melbourne, junction of high street rd and stud road). If only I had 50k.

      That is good for Australia. It’s a very good compromise of space, practicality and cost. Great value.

      It seems US is going to be the last one.

    I think it would make a great addition to my Volt. The only holding me back is I don’t like stepping up and into an SUV, pity they don’t make a low ride height version for city use only – that would be supper combination.
