Practice and qualifying sessions for the 2014 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb began few days ago in Colorado Springs and we spot that Mitsubishi led the pack in the Electric Modified Division class of five vehicles and was almost fastest overall.
Greg Tracy was the fastest in both sessions – on June 25 on theUpper section and on June 26 on the Bottom section, while Hiroshi Masuoka was second two times. Not strange when you take into consideration the 450 kW of power in Mitsubishi MiEV Evolution III racer.
Greg Tracy’s comment:
“The overnight changes we made to the suspension settings improved the handling and I am really pleased with the balance now. The tires selection in combination with this chassis setting is working perfectly, and I am very happy on being able to end on a high note today. As Mitsubishi Motors team, we have placed ourselves 1st and 2nd in the EV division, and 2nd and 3rd overall for qualifying. I left a little bit of cushion today during qualifying runs but I am pretty confident that I can make up times on race day with an impressive result.”
Hiroshi Masuoka’s comment:
“Today we were able to get 2 runs through the bottom section as our qualifying runs, and I am pleased to be able to post a quick time. If I can carry this good rhythm and momentum through the next couple of days, I am sure we can deliver a good race result. The larger sized tires and increased downforce certainly improved the cornering speed, and additionally the enhanced S-AWC system gives me extra comfort to drive through at full speed. The results posting the quickest time with Greg Tracy and second fastest with myself demonstrate the high performance capability of the MiEV Evolution III race car. Going into the race, I would like to give my best effort to deliver a good race result to thank my team for providing me a competitive machine, and to our fans who will be cheering me attack this mountain.”
TEAM APEV, with driver Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima, took third with a very small gap, so don’t expect that last year’s EV-class winner will give up the fight for the win this year.
A custom Tesla Roadster eO PP02 from Latvia is at the bottom of the table as Summit HER-02 proved to be too fast.
We hope that this year EVs will be closer to the fastest ICE cars. The third qualifying sessions will take place today and the race is scheduled for June 29.
