The pair of Mitsubishi MiEV Evolution IIs seem to so far be the quickest electric vehicles at this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPHIC) in Colorado Springs.

In qualifying, the first two spots for EVs were taken by Greg Tracy (eight-time winner of the PPIHC on motorcycles) and Hiroshi Masuoka (two-time winner of the Dakar), both in a Mitsubishi MiEV Evolution II.

Only a few combustion engined monster vehicles from the Unlimited class outdid the electric Mitsubishis.

The top qualification time of 3:56.287 is about 17 seconds quicker than last year’s top time posted by the E-RUNNER, which means that the fastest riders should be able to reach the finish line under 10 minutes when the actual race gets underway.   There’s definitely a chance for the electric class to grab the top four spots overall in the race.



Third place was taken by Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima, who also managed to go under four minutes. This year, the Monster Sport E-RUNNER Pikes Peak Special is faster than last year, but no longer dominates the EV class in performance.

Toyota – last year’s winner – somewhat disappointed our expectations. Rod Millen, driving TMG EV P002, took only fourth place, although the loss of time to the leaders remains small. In addition, this year’s result is about 25 seconds better than in 2012. Pole position isn’t worth much in PPIHC, so maybe they didn’t fight for it or want to stress the vehicle.

Fifth place was taken by Janis Horeliks, the driver of the Latvian eO PP01 . A relatively solid time was set by EV racing veteran Ikuo Hanawa, who for several years now has driven the Yokohama HER-02 .  A full-fledged production car, the Honda Fit EV took seventh.

Don’t forget that the competition also involved electric motorcycles, of which the fastest – from Lightning Motorcycles – is already shining. Carlin Dunne set a qualifying time of 4:13.532 and is quickest on two wheels!

The actual race will be held on Sunday, June 30 and we are hoping that electric vehicles will take the podium in general classification and that an electric two-wheeler will dominate for motorcycles.

Whats going on with the peddle action. Does it have to do w/ directional control??

Doesn’t look like typical brake/ accelerator movements

Mitsubishi and Toyota each have an Ace up their sleeves that other auto manufacturers don’t have. They each build electric forklifts. So they have some real world experience working with batteries, electric drives, and industrial use. They also have long established industry contacts.

I forgot to mention Nissan too.

At least Mitsubishi put a Siren on there’s as even Race EV are quite LOL!

The day will come when electrics win overall, and ICEs will be in the also-rans. So how close is it now?

Amazing that Mitsubishi beat two OUTSTANDING drivers: Monster Kojima and Rod Millen. These guys are legends… and Mitsubishi beat them! AWESOME!
