Mitsubishi announced a joint Japan-France demonstration project with energy storage systems, built from used lithium-ion batteries from electric cars.

Besides Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and Mitsubishi Corporation, other partners are Electricité de France (EDF), Forsee Power and PSA Peugeot Citroën.

Start of the project is scheduled for September at Forsee Power’s new Headquarters near Paris (France).

“The purpose of the project is to demonstrate efficient and economically feasible energy management practices based on the optimization of electricity storage, charging and generation technology with respect to existing demand.”

Mitsubishi and PSA will provide both used batteries as well as cars for V2X tests.

The System includes the following:
  • High voltage (330 volts) Energy Storage System made from Peugeot iOn, Citroen C-Zero and Mitsubishi Motors i-MiEV used automotive battery packs
  • Low voltage (48 Volts) Energy Storage System use of new automotive batteries
  • Bi-directional battery energy consumption optimization (car to building and building to car)
Especially in Japan and France where the electric-powered vehicles are becoming popular, the utilization of used lithium-ion batteries is an important factor towards the realization of a sustainable society.
The related parties aim to establish a realistic and economically viable business model combining track record in electric-powered vehicle sales (MMC, PSA Peugeot Citroën), technical capability in Energy Storage Systems (Forsee Power) and business know-how in the electric power industry (EDF, MC).
The related companies will consider establishing a new business model with energy storage systems utilizing such used batteries in the European market including France.

With the amounts they are selling, the demonstration might be 100% accurate. A used battery, a new one and a single car. They could team up with honda, they might have a used Accord PHEV left.

Demonstrated with the I-MIEV built for the Outlander. Plenty of used batteries on the way from that product line.

I thought PSA stopped to produce iOns and C-Zeros. There is just an electric Berlingo transporter.
