Mitsubishi (or do we call the company Mitsubishi-Nissan now?) announced it will unveil a new plug-in hybrid SUV at the upcoming 2016 Paris Motor Show in October.

The Ground Tourer Concept SUV (PHEV) will be positioned in the “upper strata of the automotive landscape” as the Japanese manufacturer has learned that it’s easier to market electrified high-end SUVs.

We don’t know yet any specific detail yet, or even whether or not to expect a production version; but for sure it will be another AWD Mitsubishi, based on the Outlander PHEV drivetrain technology.

Given that the past two concept plug-in SUVs shown by the company both ultimately spawned future production vehicles, we have a feeling this one will be too.

After “Concept XR PHEV II” at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show and then, “eX Concept” at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) continues with the patient crafting of its design philosophy whilst confirming its growing take at a pure (SUV) player.

This autumn, MMC will extend that conceptual journey at the 2016 Paris Motor Show with the world premiere of the all-new “Ground Tourer Concept” high-end SUV coupé.

As such, Ground Tourer Concept is meant to be the latest expression of Mitsubishi Motors’ design ambitions, expressed through four powerful elements: Augmented Possibilities, Functional Beauty, Solid Thrust and Japanese Craftsmanship.

Applied to the upper strata of the automotive landscape and associated to Mitsubishi Motors’ plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) flagship technology, this combination will translate into Ground Tourer Concept’s ability for effortless cruising – on and off the beaten tracks – while accommodating passengers in the hushed comfort and sleek design of its finely crafted interior.”

Ground Tourer? You mean it doesn’t fly?

Or perhaps, you mean Grand Tourer. (or Gran Tourismo, GT, etc. etc.)

I see you’re using the term multiple times… bit of a strange name for a product, that! (given that Grand Tourer is another well-used term in the industry)

Funny. Maybe just an artifact of some translate program.

It really is the name, lol. We actually had it written up ‘incorrectly’ as Grand Tourer in drafts.

/who knows

Here is the original media press release for the “Ground Tourer” from Mitsu

A “Ground Tourer” is a logical competitor for a “Land Cruiser”.

Ground or Grand, good idea. Sedans have quickly fallen into disfavor (are you paying attention Tesla?) so an SUV body style should appeal to a larger audience. Volvo has had better than expected success with the XC90 and I suspect Mitsubishi will as well.

Even better would be a lower price but you can’t have everything.

I hope Tesla is listening and makes a sedan (at least for the US). 9 of the top 10 best selling cars in the US were sedans, not hatchbacks.

3 rows or go home.

Another Euro point of view

The upper part of this concept as shown here looks like the Audi Q6 EV concept.

Wish Mitsu would SELL a plugin in the US already.

Is there oil money going to the CEO’s yet proven, because with No one with a plugin-SUV, except Tesla, it sure appears to be COLLUSION and Bribery going on.
