Mitsubishi presents the first look at its GT-PHEV Concept SUV, which it teased over three months ago.  The extended range SUV will make its live debut at the Paris Motor Show in October.

On the stage at the same time Mitsubishi will also present its eX Concept and Outlander PHEV.

The new Mitsubishi plug-in hybrid is equipped with an all-wheel drive system, utilizing three electric motors (two for the rear wheels and one for the front axle).

With a new generation of higher-capacity batteries, the all-electric range is extraordinary for a PHEV SUV – up to 120 km (nearly 75 miles) and 1,200 km (nearly 750 miles) total including petrol range extender.   Even if those stated numbers are Euro-based (NEDC), a real world result of 90 km/55 miles would still be pretty swell.

Will the GT-PHEV make it into production?  It certainly looks ready to go, hopefully Mitsu announces from Paris its intention to put it into production soon!

The front visage with its forceful presence employs MMC’s Dynamic Shield front design concept that portrays the front end’s function of protecting both people and the car. From the side, the Mitsubishi GT-PHEV Concept uses horizontal lines to convey its high-end SUV styling and vehicle stability. With a muscularity and intensity that gives the impression it has been carved from a single ingot of steel, the body is clothed in classy styling that flourishes sculptured dynamism highlighted by precise detailing.

Inside, the Mitsubishi GT-PHEV Concept uses a horizontal dashboard that creates a spacious ambiance, making it easier for the driver to sense changes in vehicle attitude. Together with an instrument panel with a high center console, the cockpit-like interior wraps around its people, providing a sense of solace and security. Generous use of Burgundy[3] genuine leather trim, color coordinated with the exterior roof color is another touch in creating a classy and comfortable interior space.

On the technology front, in addition to outstanding environmental performance MMC’s advanced triple-motor PHEV system delivers superior motive performance to empower drivers of any skill level to confidently follow new paths as they like through a multitude of different weather and road surface conditions, for an enjoyable and rewarding driving experience.

This PHEV system comprises a next-generation high-capacity drive battery package, three high-output and high-efficiency motors and an engine designed especially for the PHEV system featuring improved electricity generation performance and motive performance.

Now let’s just hope for:
* A good price.
* A small range extender a la Volt. Constant RPM creating electricity going directly to the motor with excess electricity charging the batteries resulting in a decent MPG in all electric mode, around 40 real world MPG even though it still needs to be cheep. At least 8 gallons of gas tank.

The Volt doesn’t have “a small range extender” — it has a 100hp ICE fully capable of moving the car by itself, even if not at the acceleration of the electric mode.

And the Mitsu will most likely be a “classic” PHEV with engine capable of driving the wheels directly, not just charging the battery like the i3.

This SUV could be really popular. A 75 mile range in plug in car would really change the way small SUV’s are sold.

Now if only they could put these next generation EV batteries into the Mitsubishi i-miev to make it have some real wow range like this car.

Make it a 7 seater and actually bring it to the US! Leave the I-Miev in Japan.

We will likely go with a “normal” hybrid for the family hauler but would love some all electric range (which 80% of our driving would be within).

Agreed, Mitsubishi seems to have made a deal with someone so their PHEV SUV’s never see the light of day I the USA. By the time this SUV’s make it to the USA, the Tesla Model Y will make it obsolete.

Exactly! Here in SUV-obsessed USA, we can expect to wait for this Mitsu product to reach our shores 5 years after it debuts in Asia and Europe. If at all.

If the reason for the latest delivery delay is so that they can deliver something with a drivetrain more like this in the US next summer, the I would forgive them all their delays.

Looks great… Like the EX Concept… looking forward to the all electrics… hoping for the iMiev update too… imagine how far that little city cruiser could go if it had a 32kWh battery that weighed about the same as its 16kWh… 130 to 150 miles?… with CHAdeMO and maybe CCS on the J plug Also… very versatile with new climate control… heat pump and electric windshield heater, could be great.

Concepts are only fun because we can joke about them like SOP in 2050. Otherwise they are just a waste of time.

Mitsubishi’s Kizashi?

Given Mitsubishi’s ineptitude and repeated delay’s in bringing any PHEV/BEV into North America besides the super sexy IMiev, Inside EV’s shouldn’t be posting anything Mitsu related until they can get their act together and treat North America seriously.
