Metrocab on the streets of London

The latest episode of Fully Charged is dedicated to Frazer-Nash’s Range Extended Electric (REE) Metrocab taxi for London.

This very interesting and unusual car was recently tested by taxi drivers and, according to Frazer-Nash, should be sold without a premium over the diesel taxis (probably including tax incentives), which probably makes it a no brainer to go with this range-extended model.

Frazer-Nash is thinking that it might be inconvenient to often plug in to charge in taxi bays, so perhaps Metrocab will be equipped with wireless charging in addition to the plug port.

“A new electric taxi for London’s diesel choked, particulate saturated streets. Bigger, smoother and cleaner, a delight to drive and so much more economic than the classic rattlers.”

Every bump produces a clunk or rattle and these are brand new! I think if I were a hack paying money for a vehicle I’d stick to a car from a major Mfg. like the e-NV200.

Think the rattles are most likely from the camera setup, and stuff in storage bins. Most cars from major mfg will not stand up to the constant abuse that a cab gets.

Every cab in North America is made by a major auto Mfg…

Pretty impressive, though a diesel version would be even moreso, and perhaps work better logistically/fleet mgmt-wise.. Plus, diesel is still tax-advantaged AFAIK.

12.2kWh is a bit small, though if they’re less conservative than GM and use 10kWh of it it’d be comparable to the Volt, and at lower city speeds could probably eke out a reliable 40-45 miles per charge.. I do hope it has fast wireless charging though, enough to get a good bit of range in the time it takes for a cup of tea or lunch..
