New energy vehicles (all-electric and plug-in hybrids) enjoyed high-speed sales growth in China, according to CAAM.

In March, some 14,122 NEVs were sold, which is three times more than in March 2014. 9,390 were BEVs, while 4,732 were PHEVs.

YTD numbers of NEVs sold stands at 26,581, although EV Sales Blog noted 22,592 cars.

BYD Qin remains the most popular model and last month it set a new high of 2,470 sales! 6,319 sold YTD is more than next three top-selling models combined.

Tesla Model S seems to getting wind and this year so far Tesla moved 1,329 Model S – on average 443 a month.

The difference between the Model S and the best selling all-electric car isn’t much and it seems Tesla could still reach the top spot among BEVs in China.

All good, until you see the huge sales volume in the overall Chinese market that VW seems to have a very high profile in. Early days and small steps

If China puts the hammer down and severely restricts new ICE car registrations but freely allows EV registrations then EV sales might really pick up in China. Increased volume should push down component prices and battery prices such that EV prices drop. That could really start to break the EV market open.
