Mahindra Reva Eyes Tesla Patents
Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles seems to be the only automaker truly interested in Tesla’s open patenet announcement.
Mahindra Reva, makers of India’s only mass-produced electric vehicle the e2o, says it’ll review all of the patents that Tesla has made available.
Mahindra & Mahindra (parent company of Mahindra Reva) executive director and president, Pawan Goenka, stated:
“We have not yet reviewed the patents available. [We] will have to determine the applicability to our EV products.”
Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles CEO Chetan Maini, commented:
“We will review them and it’s too early to comment on the direct benefit to us.”
Maini believes that Tesla’s open patent decision is a “great idea,” adding that:
“As a philosophy, I do believe it’s going to make people rethink on IP and technology sharing.”
We’re aware that both BMW and Nissan have been in talks with Tesla over shared technology, but nothing concrete has come of this and it’s not immediately clear if either BMW’s or Nissan’s discussion with Tesla centered around using Tesla patents. It seems the Tesla-BMW-Nissan conversations had more to do with shared charging then with accessing Tesla patents.
