As announced recently, Mahindra has launched the Mahindra e2o in the UK, a four-seat electric city car from Bangalore, India.

The EVs are available exclusively through a website portal because of a lack of a dealer network, while test drives are offered in few large cities.

The UK edition of the Mahindra e2o is a more highly-appointed and better equipped car, with a larger capacity battery pack than its counterpart in India.

There are two trim levels (prices includes £4,500 plug-in car grant):

  • City – £12,995
  • TechX – £15,995 (Currently available with the launch offer of free health check and home delivery, and including a £1,000 discount – £14,995)

The Mahindra website states the e20 has a 15.46 kWh lithium-ion battery (69 cells) and a range (NEDC) of 79 miles – plus up to 8-10 miles of “Revive® emergency remote refueling“, which sounds like an on-demand discharge of the battery below the default use (ala the original 2014 edition of the Mercedes B-Class). Top speed is 63 mph.

The TechX trim also includes a CHAdeMO fast charging inlet that enables “empty to 95% charge in 90 minutes

Assembly

  • Located not far from Electronic City, Bangalore, India, the Mahindra e2o assembly plant is one of the world’s most energy-efficient manufacturing plants and the first automobile plant to receive Platinum rating from the India Green Building Council.
  • Solar powered, rainwater harvested, naturally lit, cooled and ventilated, Forbes described it as “inspired by trees, vertical gardens and noiseless technology, the Mahindra factory resembles a futuristic retreat rather than a manufacturing facility”.

Structure

  • The e2o is a compact 3-door hatchback. Featuring a tall-boy design for superior visibility, the e2o seats 4 adults in comfort, and is constructed around a tubular steel space frame, with large front crumple zone and dual side impact beams, on to which are bonded (not welded) colour impregnated dent-resistant ABS plastic body panels, materials, a process that is much less polluting than steel panels sprayed with paint. The result is a low carbon, lightweight yet strong, maneuverable, and highly energy-efficient city car.

Note: The NEDC range quoted of 79 miles plus up to 8 additional miles of Revive® is the official range under ideal driving conditions. As a general guide, the typical drivable range is 60-70 miles during warmer months and 50-60 miles during colder months, with up to 8 miles of Revive®. Note that this is an approximate guide only and that the range of electric cars is affected by the way you drive, cold weather, hilly terrain, use of the cabin heater or other auxilliaries, weight of passengers or goods in the car, and according to the age and condition of the batteries.

    How did an almost-16kWh pack get only 80 miles on the NDEC cycle? That worries me over its efficiency.

    I’m afraid to see how this will end up, but I want to see the best of this. Perhaps a fresh contender for the Twizy, which is holding off a refresh for no good reason. Mahindra should put themselves in France, Germany and the Netherlands as a much better bet. Especially when battery rental LEAFs and ZOEs touch the e20’s price, as well as second hand versions of them for full.

      Considering the Gen 1 Volt with a 17.1 kwh pack was only rated 38 miles, albeit EPA this seems plausible.

      I suspect it struggles with the 2 mins above 80 km/h part of the cycle. It probably also has shocking regen capability – probably rear wheel drive.

    3. Well… let’s compare it to the i-MiEV (non-US version)…

      Motor power – 19 Vs 47kW
      Torque – 54 Vs 180 Nm
      Kerb Wt – 830 Vs 1080kg

      Given it has the same battery pack (16kWh) I am surprised it has such a small range, too. Perhaps the CdA is appalling? But without knowing what the test cycle is, it is hard to make a comparison.

      One thing missing from all the sites I visited is the 0-60 time (probably about 20 seconds…!)

    Great car, this is what people should be driving in London and Birmingham but 15,000 pounds? Forget it, buy a Twizy. If only Renault could dump the price gouging 45 pounds a month battery rental and keep the price where it is they would have a competitive offering.

      I don’t think so. According to Wikipedia, even the European “heavy quadricycle” category limits the vehicle to a maximum w power of 15KW. I don’t see the figure specified, but with a claimed top speed of 63 MPH, I’m guessing this car is capable of better than that. Even if the claimed top speed is, shall we say, optimistic, it looks to me like this would perform well enough to be driven on many highways, and perhaps legally can be driven on all of them. Note I didn’t say safely, just legally.

      At a “gross vehicle weight” of 1262 kg (is that different from curb weight?), it also looks like the car is well over the weight limit for a “motorized quadricycle”, which is 450 kg sans battery pack. It seems very unlikely the 15.46 kWh battery pack weighs anywhere near that much, since a 2012 Telsa Model S85’s battery pack apparently weighed closer to 1200 than 1300 lbs.

    £14,995, at today’s exchange rate, would be USD $21,722. That for a plastic-bodied, 4-seat microcar with a top speed of 63 MPH, a 15.46 kWh battery pack, and a claimed range (on the inflated European NEDC test cycle) of 79 miles.

    Compare to the Th!nk City, at US$41,695, which was a plastic bodied 2+2 seat (whatever that means; presumably not seating for 4 normal sized adults) microcar with a top speed of 68 MPH, a 23 kWh (li-ion) battery pack, and a claimed range of 99 miles. Of course, that car is no longer being sold; it was priced much too high.

    Seems to compare favorably, especially the price. And unlike the Th!nk City, the Mahindra e2o is backed by a company which is already a going concern in India. So perhaps this is the toe-in-the-door for Indian auto makers selling in first-world countries. Will this lead to bigger and better things, like Japanese auto makers selling cars in the USA? Or will it prove to be a failure, like BYD test marketing the e6 in the USA?

    Only time will tell.

      The Think City was odd looking and overpriced . . . but it was a real car.

      It was fully crash tested and the US version goes around 74 mph. And its 24KWH battery gave it a range pretty much on par with the LEAF.

      I think this Mahindra is not a real car but instead classified as a quadracycle such that it has not passed all the crash tests.

      Considering the much more substantial Renault Zoe Can be had for £18,449 outright or £13,999 with battery lease, I would be surprised if Mahindra sells more than 10 of these a year.

      This product is classic reason why people consider BEVs undesirable. There is nothing compelling about this car at all in light of the competition. Pricing this quasi car £5000 from REAL cars is just suicide IMHO, maybe at £10,000 or less it might have a fighting chance.

      Also the Mahindra e2o is the only passenger car in production with a live axle rear suspension, something even the mustang has abandoned. Meaning the ride quality is going to be a lot worse than car buyers have been used to.
