Most Made In America Plug-In? The Tesla Model S, Built In Fremont, CA

While still yet to reach the number one spot on the “Made In The US Auto Index”, the Tesla Model S tops the list of plug-in vehicles coming in at #13.  Perhaps when Model S battery fabrication fully moves to Tesla’s Nevada battery facility in 2017 it can take the top spot.

The list is compiled each year by Associate Professor Frank DuBois at the American University’s Kogod School of Business.

What is questionable to me, regarding the “Made In America” part, are the 2 categories “Profit Margin” and “US HQ.”

Neither one of those has anything to do with “Made In America” yet they are weighed very heavily.

Not to mention that there have to be a lot of R&D overseas for the Spark and to some extent Volt & Tesla, especially on the battery components, yet they are all given full points.

Finally, Focus EV – so this confirms it. Canada is the 51st state of America!

For better, or worse, we ARE joined at the hip.

HQ is only 1 point, that is the smallest they could possibly weight that category.

Profit Margin is 6 points. I’ll agree that one is significant but isn’t the point of Made in America that it keeps money in America?


If you wanted to actually calculate how much of the Profits are kept in America, you would have to find out what percent of the shareholders are Americans, and what percent of shareholders live elsewhere.

Just for sake of example, let’s pretend that Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund (SAMA Foreign Holdings) invested heavily in Ford stocks, corporate bonds, and other equity holding in F. Let’s pretend SAMA owns 49% of Ford’s outstanding equities.

Let’s say for the sake of argument, that US investors bought up lots of Nissan stocks, and that 51% of Nissan was owned by US stock holders.

Which one would be more “American”, and kept the most profits in the US? Well, that would be Nissan, not Ford. Regardless of where it is headquartered.

Again, all the numbers/names are just for sake of example.

When is Ford going to upgrade their batteries?

After GM finishes testing the next revision of the LG battery and then Ford will just piggy back on the new design.

Where will Tesla rank once the gigafactory is up and running?

Tesla claims it will be #1 when it starts using batteries from the Gigafactory.

I have no idea whether or not that’s actually true.

They use an odd ranking system, where they have six cars ranked #1 and then the next ranked car is #2. Using a more normal ranking the Model S would be around 50th.

It’s odd that they have figures for “transmission” for the Model S, which has no transmission.

I wonder what they’re actually using as the basis for those figures. The gearbox, which is a rather minor component of the Model S? The power electronics, which one might argue would be the equivalent in a BEV?

Have you finished studying transmission yet? How does the 8-speed transmission look to you in complexity?

The motor for the Nissan Leaf is produced in the Decherd Tennessee Powertrain Assembly Plant, yet the Leaf shows no engine made in America content in the Professor’s list. I wonder why not.

Where is the transmission made for the Volt and ELR?

The 2011-2015 Volt transmissions have been assembled at a GM factory in Mexico. The most expensive components, the motors and power inverter, are made in Japan by Hitachi Automotive.

The 2016 Volt transmission will be assembled in the USA with motors and power inverter manufactured by Hitachi Automotive in Kentucky.

What extra value do that bring to customers, especially when not in America. In a globalized world this is irrelevant and even has a touch of nationalism which may appear as agressive and have a detrimental repulsive effect. It is certainly not playing in the way of openess in fact it is exactly the reverse it tend to exclude other countries. The product can than start to have an imperialistic image, something more of a weapon used to destroy others local production while also extorting those others customers base money. At Tesla, this is all the contrary of the employment policy that has at contrary relied on people from different origins like india, mexico perhaps even a south african. Giving jobs for you country man is good but claiming highest nationalism is a very different beast that doesn’t bode well, especially seen from Belgium or some other past war sensitive place.

Prius is one of the “least American” car out there.

The Prius was a technological breakthrough in its time that brought a first experience of something else than an ICE driving the wheels in a mass market affordable global distribution car. That is why so many Americans and others bought the car not because where it was made.
