London Gets Its 5th Tesla Supercharger


One year ago, Tesla Motors opened its first London store.

Four months ago, Tesla recorded its first Model S sales in the UK and concurrently opened its first Supercharger in London.

Now, Tesla is announcing the opening of its 5th Supercharger in London.  That’s 5 in one city.

We’re rather certain that London is now the Supercharger capital of the world.  In fact, we can’t think of even one other city that has more than 1 Supercharger, can you?

I wonder why they have so many. I thought the point of the superchargers was for long-distance travel. But having 5 in a city seems more like convenience charging.

That was the original point but the strategy shifted this year (at least what was known publicly) to include in-city charging. This is to open more market potential for customer that don’t have daily access to charging at home (or work). You can see that in the clustering of Superchargers in cities in China and NYC as well. I assume this will happen in all highly dense metropolitan areas within Tesla’s core markets.

There ain’t no clustering of Superchargers going on in NYC. NYC has only one Supercharger location in the outer borough of Queens at JKF airport. It’s quite a hike to get there from most of NYC, and if you take the Van Wyck Expresway to get to JFK you’ll quickly find out that its usually a parking lot.

Anyone has idea how many Model S in London/UK by now? Seems like an awful number of superchargers for just a couple of hundred cars.

It should be somewhere around 500-600.

But I’m surprised that they have built that many there. They must know something we don’t.

But they are all mini chargers, where only 1 or 2 cars can charge at full speed at once.
Maybe it’s just too expensive to rent a very central and large lot for 4-6 chargers (8-12 spots).

HK, has two I believe, but clearly they are following a different strategy in London. Most cities, in the U.S. don’t even have a single sc within the city limits.
I think in London with their congestion/pollution charge for ice, Tesla is making a point that aside from not having to pay those charges, you could also not pay to charge your vehicle. In addition for those living in apartments, which is most is a big David Murray says, it is for convenience, as it answers the common complaint of no place to charge.

Good point perhaps they will open Tesla Cafe “Starbucks like” for charging in dense cities for people living in condos with not access to charging at home.

That’s a great point. If Tesla can put superchargers in places you would like to visit for half an hour or so on their own merits then charging isn’t really that much of an inconvenience. I’d much rather spend 35 minutes charging at superchargers located near interesting/useful stuff than spend 25 minutes charging at Fremont after hours where there are no available restrooms and absolutely nothing to do but sit in the car and watch the range go up.

We are seeing a similar development in China. My guess is that this is being done based on unit density.
@David It is very impractical in cites like London, Tokyo, Beijing (5), Shanghai(4), etc. to drive from one side to the other to use a supercharger. Heck, I don’t like shooting out of Heathrow airport into six lanes of traffic holding the steering wheel on the opposite side than I am accustomed to, let alone telling me I need to drive across the London madness. Though I have not personally driven in Beijing, I have experienced the traffic madness from the back of a cab. Again having to navigate across that city I say “no thanks”. I think this is the logic.

No, the logic is that the obstacles to installing your own charging point where you park your car are nearly insurmountable in some of these cities. When you live in a high rise and you have to rent or purchase your parking space in a multi-level parking structure controlled by a management company that you have no influence over, it’s VERY difficult to get a charging point installed.

Tesla? One step forward, five steps backward. Where’s my Model 3??

Wait, CD – did I miss something? Is it already 2017? After all – the ‘3’ was never promised for before 2017, so what is the rush?

Model 3 wont support CD’s…
