LG Chem Expanding Battery Factory, Adding Jobs in Holland, Michigan

LG Chem is working to expand battery production at its factory in Holland, Michigan.

News of this upgrade comes from LG Chem’s North American President, Nick A. Kassanos, who says that we should expected to see up to 1550 news jobs added at the site over the next year and a half.

Speculatively, we believe the site upgrade could be for battery packs for the Chevrolet Bolt, but LG Chem is not providing us with any specifics, beyond this statement from Kassanos at this point in time:

“This is for pack assembly specifically, which is where the lithium ion batteries goes into, so we are very proud to be able to expand and give back to the community because you have been here to support us.”

Holland Sentinel reports:

“Rockford Construction, on behalf of LG Chem, requested site plan approval for a new industrial production facility to be used almost entirely for production of lithium ion battery applications.”

“The Holland Planning Commission approved unanimously on Tuesday, Feb. 14, to allow the construction of the facility, which will be built on 78.5 acres in an I-2 industrial district located at 875 E. 48th St.”

The approved plans call for a 2-stage upgrade. In stage one, a 104,544-square-foot industrial production facility will be constructed next to the existing main production facility. Stage 2 call for a 53,995-square-foot addition to be added to the west side of the building constructed in stage 1. Additional parking will be added too.

But it’s the cell capacity that’s the real bottleneck.

Sounds like they have plans to triple Holland MI cell production by 2020…



How do you arrive at a conclusion that they are tripling Holland plant capacity? If proportional to square footage it looks like a 50% increase. By jobs it looks like a 67% increase. That would put their capacity between 4.5 – 5 GWh/Yr.

The info in the link you posted is interesting. It shows a more than 600% increase in world capacity by 2020 however it has the total US capacity at 38GWh in 2020. Presumably that would be the 35GWh Tesla originally projected + the 3 GWh that GM/LG planned from the Holland MI plant. Tesla has plans for 50GWh in 2018 and 85 GWh by 2020 out of GF1 and the Holland plant’s capacity is expanding. It wouldn’t surprise me if next year GM announces plans for either another plant or additional expansion of the Holland plant.

Not quite as ambitious as a GigaFactory, but it is a start.

Note LG did just build 2 new plants (China -done, Poland – in construction)

Having a single large factory only makes sense if you have a single large place to send them. LG doesn’t have that. They sell to many customers.

3 smaller plants can make as many cells as one bigger one. Dont get too hung up on big buildings. The largest selling car in the US isn’t built in the biggest plant it’s built in several smaller ones.

Bolt must be selling very well. Where’s our monthly sales report? Get with it!

Maybe GM is about to reveal another plug-in vehicle? Or perhaps they think the demand for the Volt and Bolt is increasing?

LG (Holland) does supply to Ford and Chrysler as well. And currently the Bolt EV cells come from Korea. Maybe this was part of the agreement, to move pack assembly to the US??

Locally made battery cells and packs has got to be cheaper for both LG Chem and GM. It makes sense.

This is good news as record High temperatures in February (winter) hit central Florida.

GM or otherwise, any growth is good news. What would be really smart is if they used rail to move their freight. I see that missing from the aerial photo. Roads in Michigan are in dystopian shape due to their aggressive use of road freight.

Our weather isn’t the best for roads either.

LG does all types of packs for several customers. They wont likely have the most GWh output but will have the highest pack quantity.
