John Metric recently became the first individual in the world to break into the 8’s in a street legal electric car.

The race took place on 14 March at Royal Purple Raceway and the results are: 8.913 s @ 147.99 mph

About two tenths faster than the 9.122 second previous world record on the same track a few months ago.

with his electric Miata

NEDRA NEWS – Baytown, TX (March 15, 2014) Breaking the 8’s has been a goal electric drag racers with street based electric cars also known as “door slammers” have been attempting to achieve for quite awhile. John Metric finally did it with his electric Miata, “Assault and Battery” Friday night at Royal Purple raceway with a 1/4 mile time of 8.913 seconds at 147.99 mph. It’s also the first doorslammer to break 125 mph in the 1/8 mile!

Holy crap, thats fast. is that a miata?

Yupe, very fast, very Mazda Miata.

Sidenote: Is it just me or does it seem like AC/DC is always playing in the background for these 1/4 mile time slips?

YES it does and ACDC rules btw!!

very speed

much Miata

so impress

wow

It makes sense since it is AC and DC current we are talking about here… 🙂

I wonder how long it will be before ICE drag racers start converting to EV? I’m sure they are getting tired of being beaten by them.

I wish the dragstrip near my house raced all EVs.. I’d get a lot more sleep on Friday and Saturday nights.

Getting beaten by them? That rice burner that the miata beat was not tubbed out and was probably the slowest ice car at the strip (or one of them). EVs should drag 1/8th mile if you ask me and then ICE cars would have a real problem beating EVs.

Very cool!

Congratulations John!

In case anyone is wondering, A&B is not technically street legal right now. All we have to do is put the windshield wipers back on and go get the sticker. However, the exterior is 100% bumper to bumper factory Miata.

As far as ICEers converting to electric, that’s why we now offer conversion work (race cars to daily drivers)
