Jalopnik: BMW i8, Chevy Volt & Tesla Model S Among “Ten Cars That Totally Changed Our Minds”

Jalopnik posted a 10-car list of vehicles “that totally changed our [the writers at Jalopnik] minds.” On that list are 3 vehicles of particular interest to us.

The 3 vehicles are the Chevrolet Volt, Tesla Model S, and the BMW i8. It is understandable why each is capable of mind-altering.

First up, #6 on the list, the Chevrolet Volt.  Jalopnik states:

“Launched when everyone had lost faith in GM, the Volt defied expectations and was a great, forward thinking car.”

Which is absolutely true. The Volt was and still is the only EREV that really got the magic formula right in our opinion – some significant electric range to cover most daily needs, and a range extending operation that practically mimics the electric propulsion capabilities.

Tesla Model S.

Tesla Model S.

Second, coming in at the #3 spot, the Tesla Model S.

“Before the Model S electric cars were kind of a joke – interesting, but not really remarkable outisde of the fact that they were electric. The Model S blew everyone away by not just being a great electric car, but a great car.”

The Model S clearly rips apart any stereotype or skepticism an individual might have towards electric cars.  It’s quick, practical, has a long range, and there’s that network of Supercharging stations.  If Tesla can come anywhere close to the Model S for a reasonable price in 2017 with the Model 3 well, the automotive world will change.

BMW i8

BMW i8

In the #1 spot, the BMW i8.

“The i8 showed car enthusiasts that the future isn’t something to be feared, but embraced wholeheartedly. The future is here, and it’s cool as h*ll.”

The i8 presents a new way of making a performance car. Just like the Porsche 918, McLaren P1, and Ferrari LaFerrari… but not nearly as expensive as any them…the i8 performs well, while being “greener” at the same time.

Do you agree with Jalopnik’s choosing of these 3 vehicles? Should any other plug-ins have made the list?

What’s a Jalopnik?

Trust me, it’s not worth pursuing the answer to your question.

Did they really censor hell?

sven

Hell no. But InsideEVs did. :-\

James

LOL! 🙂

You’ve got to give Nissan credit for the outstanding management commitment. The only issue is range, a bit more range and it’s a game changer.

Except for the way they treated the early adopters and the battery issues. If you’ve followed them for 3+ years it was abysmal.

Open-Mind

Nissan also needs to fix the Leaf’s ridiculous exterior styling.

Mike

And let’s not forget the BMW i3.
A two car family could power up from a solar home possibly without any increase in the solar array.

Most efficient EV on the market.

Matthias

The Volt is great,
the Tesla is gorgeous and the i8 is, well,
Mozart on wheels!

The Tesla Roadster changed a lot of minds about electric cars. The i8 is a bit of a “me too” car.

Anything that changes a gearhead’s mind is OK by me. i8 with 3cyl ReX, puny all electric range, near-impossible availability, two-Corvette price and a hood that takes two technicians to open (see video on InsideEVs.com) is no “game changer” in my book.

Glad these guys included Volt. We need more Jalopniks out there explaining to potential Prius\hybrid buyers how\why Volt is unmatched in e-drive with no limitations to range, and to understand Volt is the only affordable “bridge” from ICE to 200-400 mile EVs of the future.

I’m a loud and prod Volt owner but the Roadster and the Model S have to get the top two spots.

There would be no EV market to speak of if Tesla didn’t persistently shame the rest of the industry.

My list:

Tesla (both cars)
Volt
Leaf

Taser54

I’m not going to rank them. I will say the Tesla and the Volt have done a great deal for bringing EVs to the US without major compromises. That bodes well for future versions of EVs.

Outlander, people are standing in line to buy it – if ahem, other manufacturers weren’t so justifiably afraid of cannibalizing their cash cow sales, quick math says more gas than even Tesla has saved in large PHEVs alone.
as stated here so many times, where is the Chebby SAV/crossover.. IF you had any doubt, look at the Demand at the price of the Outlander, and from mebbe Not the most loved and respected automaker..

questions?

(last is a rhetorical, not literal)
