IBM Rolls Out “Battery 500” Lithium Air Presentation. Ready For Use in A Decade. Or Two

APR 21 2012 BY STAFF

The basic concept seems simple enough.   The system pulls energy out of the air itself  by removing oxygen from it while driving, and then having that oxygen react with lithium ions, and thus creating electricity.  Thereby solving issues of weight and range; as the main component at play here, is air itself.

IBM promises:

  • 500 miles/800 km range per charge
  • a total electric drive system comparable in size, weight and price to a gasoline drive train

So affordability, range, and dependancy on oil, all resolved in once swoop. Unfortunately, as is often the case with electrical battery advancements, cost effectiveness and the rigors of masss production has IBM saying this:

“If all continues to go well, we could see air breathing batteries powering cars sometime between 2020 and 2030”
