Hyundai Kona Electric In-Depth Walkaround, First Drive, More: Videos

SEP 11 2018 BY STEVEN LOVEDAY 13

Check out these informative videos about the all-new 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric.

YouTuber The EV Puzzle recently took delivery of his brand-new Hyundai Kona Electric Premium SE. His subscribers had asked for a comprehensive, up-close look at many aspects of the car. While he apologizes for not being a professional videographer, he does a fine job taking plenty of time to walk around the car in great detail (above). This may be one of the most exhaustive looks at the car we’ve seen to date (and there’s no annoying dialogue). He takes us inside and out and leaves no stone unturned, although he does admit that he won’t be going through the navigation or in-car media in this video. Let’s hope he dives into that in the near future.

Video Description via The EV Puzzle On YouTube:

Close up with the car.

All angles, inside and out as requested by several subscribers.

Not demo-ing Satnav or media in this video and not going through all the setup options.

Not the prettiest of videos I know but hopefully it’s practical.

Now to find some copyright free music which doesn’t sound cringe-worthy.

Moving right along, this Kona Electric owner’s previous video was posted not long after he picked up the new car. In terms of first drives, the video below couldn’t be more “first” since he includes us in his drive home from taking delivery. Keep in mind that he tells us the dealership seemed to have no clue about the car, especially in regards to charging. Nonetheless, he says the Kona Electric is “Absolutely Brilliant.” The next morning, he shared another video driving the Kona Electric at night. We’ve embedded both shares and video descriptions below. Enjoy!

Video Description:

Pickup day and first drive / test / review for my UK Kona Electric Premium SE in Ceramic Blue.

Slightly rushed to get it out ASAP but hope you enjoy……

Slightly distracted by the planning for filming etc yet mildly nervous. Will it live up to the expectations from my search and decision to buy the Kona, sight unseen.

Fortunately, I need not have feared. The car is simply brilliant and exceeded my expectations. I can honestly say it’s a better driving experience than the i3, Leaf, Zoe and Ioniq. Comparing the cars beyond that personal preference gets harder as there aren’t like for like comparisons in every element. Some cars have this but not that etc.

Do I miss any features from the other cars I tested? Yes, the Zoe giving stats of regen recouped energy is brilliant. I wish the Kona had that.

Minor issues:
A 2nd USB to allow USB music & Android Auto together would be nice.
Storage compartment in side of boot space would be nice.

Note: At the point I’m saying WOW it accelerates!!! etc please note I didn’t try Sport mode. it’s even quicker in Sport Mode!

If you just want the driving bits, skip in about 5 minutes.

Sadly it takes a full day to get a video out it seems. Sorry for the delay.
A few hours filming and prep. 5 hours downloading and editting, 2 hours producing and 3 hours uploading….. 35mins watching.

Video Description:

Just a short video with a few ramblings about efficiency and the lights etc.

It looks like a contender.

Texas Leaf

I agree, it looks like the Kona Electric is going to be a strong contender in the US against the Bolt EV and the Leaf. The only way Hyundai could screw this up is if they ignore the American market like they did with the Ioniq.

GM: “EVs are so gosh darned expensive to produce when you limit production far below demand and try hard not to sell them”
Hyundai: “hold my beer”

Brian

Yup. It’s got the specs and the price tag to take the affordable EV market by storm. Hyundai will have a hard time producing enough to meet demand, I’m sure.

Troy

99% of my needs are met with my 2018 Leaf, which I got for $28,000 before taxes and gov’t rebates.

Decided not to wait for the 64kWh LG cars coming out since I didn’t want to pay $10,000 more just for that 1%.

Not entirely sure I made the right choice, will have to indeed wait & see what the demand is this year.

The Kona Electric website states that Kona will have “HOV/Carpool Lane Access”. Since EVs only have HOV/Carpool Lane Access in California as far as I know, this is a strong indication that the Kona will only be offered in California. GM made a strong commitment to a nation wide rollout of the Bolt EV when it went into production, I have seen nothing like that from Hyundai on the Kona Electric.

I think we have to assume that the Kona Electric will only be available in compliance states in very limited quantities for the foreseeable future.

Brian

I’m pretty sure that they have HOV access in NY as well, although there are no such lanes near me. Most of them are on LI, but if you have access, that’s a huge incentive.

Still, NY is also a ZEV state, so your point still stands – this might be a compliance-only availability car for now. That would stink for such a great car.

Dan F.

Yea, We will need to wait and see if Hyundai/Kia brings these cars and the previous Ioniq to the US in any kind of meaningful numbers.

Hyundai updated their website – late 2018 availability has changed to

‘2019 KONA ELECTRIC
COMING EARLY 2019

Thelastpetrol

Yup, that waiting list must be filling up quick.

Adoreizi

Probably not released yet but doesn’t hurt to ask: pricing announced for US yet?

Miggy

New Zealand had 22 sales of the Kona EV in July & August.
Dealers are saying they have pre orders and are sold out for the rest of the year.

Djoni

Indeed, a nice contender if available in Canada soon.
