The Hyundai IONIQ, announced one week ago, was revealed in two more teasers – one for exterior and one for interior.

Unveiling is scheduled for January in Korea and later in Europe (Geneva) and U.S. (New York).

Hyundai IONIQ is to be the first model available in three versions – all-electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid.

In the first image it looks like a normal car, without any flashy design. Hyundai states that “sleek and simple exterior reduces aerodynamic drag for greater efficiency“.

“A new rendering of Hyundai Motor’s all-new IONIQ hints at how the innovative, alternative-fuel compact vehicle, which is due for launch in early 2016, will combine head-turning good looks with class-leading aerodynamic performance.

Hyundai Motor has confirmed that the IONIQ will be the world’s first car to offer a choice of three efficient and ultra-low-emission powertrains: full electric, plug-in gasoline / electric hybrid, or gasoline / electric hybrid. With a sleek, coupe-like silhouette and numerous eye-catching details, its confident design is a match for its bold environmental credentials.

The IONIQ will deliver a fun and responsive driving experience, while also meeting the needs of those wishing to reduce the impact their motoring has on the environment. Hyundai Motor’s designers have therefore created an exterior design that is rich in emotional appeal, as well as making a significant contribution to meeting the car’s environmentally-focused brief.

Simple, carefully wrought contours minimize wind resistance and assist the efficient management of airflow around the exterior. At the front, familiar Hyundai design themes are evident notably the signature hexagonal grille, which is also topped by an attractive gloss-black element that extends outwards to meet distinctive new headlamps featuring integrated ‘C’-position lights. The exterior color choice adds to the car’s allure, formulated to be evocative of fog about to lift.

Inside the IONIQ the smooth, elegant and clutter-free theme continues. There is efficient use of interior space and a clear, logical approach is applied to the layout of control functions. Simple and stylish surfaces make use of eco-friendly materials to convey a futuristic yet warm cabin ambience that will appeal to a new generation of motorists.

Even before the arrival of the IONIQ, Hyundai Motor is already one of the world’s leading manufacturers of hybrid and low- or zero-emission vehicles. In 2013, the company became the first car manufacturer to mass-produce a hydrogen-fueled vehicle, the Tucson Fuel Cell (ix35 Fuel Cell in some markets).

The IONIQ’s name references elements of its creation. An ion is an electrically-charged atom, linking to the car’s clever combination of electrified powertrains. The second part of the name references the uniqueoffering it brings to the Hyundai range, demonstrating the brand’s environmental commitment and willingness to maximize choice for its customers. Finally, the Q is depicted in the car’s logo as a visual breakthrough, acknowledging the fresh new approach of this advanced, low-emission model.”

“The i-oniq concept has an innovative powertrain that demonstrates Hyundai’s commitment to clean technology.  A 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine is mated, via a generator, to a lithium ion electric motor which produces 109 ps.  In electric-only mode, i-oniq has a range of 120 km, while with assistance from the petrol engine it can travel up to 700 km, producing just 45 g/km of CO2 in the process.”

Why bother with the concept car that will never see production? That’s like saying you could have this, but no, we won’t ever give it to you, you can have something much worst in reality.

Clearly the spy shots show a vehicle that is far more pedestrian looking than any of the concept art.

I what exactly going to say that, big contrast between teaser pics (sexy looking car) and spy shots (really dull car).

So now people compain that it’s a ‘dull’ EV?

Before people complained that the Leaf, the new Prius and the i3 looked weird (even so on purpose so that the masses still prefer ICE cars).

If the very same teaser appeared with a Tesla badge (Model 3) there would probably be a collective orgasm…

And you would claim that anything that has a Tesla badge was a POS.

And anything that claims to be “electrified” that does not have a Tesla badge needs to be defended vigorously.

Because it will obviously bankrupt Tesla.

I never once wrote the Roadster and especially the Model S didn’t look good. They look good.

Model X has doors that aren’t practical and I don’t like it as much, but still an average to good-looking SUV.

I just want an EV that’s cool, but not a spaceship. Just make me a BMW 3 with electric innards.

Like the BMW 330e? You can already buy it (in europe, US should follow soon).

I can’t even see how they associate them as the same car. The concept looks ok, the actual looks like a bloated prius. Maybe their camo is realllly good.

I’d be happy if it isn’t ugly like so many cars now days.
If it is really aero and light 30kwhrs could give it 120-140 mile range.
200wthrs/mile which should be doable gives 150 miles and 200+ miles with 40kwhrs as the Tesla 3 likely will get.
Hyundai could really win by bringing it out as a 200+ mile EV, at least as an option.

It’s the drivetrain that matters most to me. 120 km (75 miles) of all electric range is pretty awesome.

Yeah, I guess 75 miles isn’t so bad for 4-door a compliance car. When compared with the mid-gen Leaf, and even the upcoming next generation electrics I think the IONIQ buyers will likely be brand loyal buyers most importantly.

It sure does have an interesting “T” shape. Hmmm where have I seen that before?

The T-Shape is absolutely terrible for interior layout (rear seating in Volt, a real world example) and limits range because of the reduced volume for batteries.

I have no bloody idea why anyone would copy it, for a serious EV. 😛

What is an engine that delivers 109 pisses? Or is that Ponys? I assume a pony power is smaller than a horsepower.

In any event that is one metric unit I haven’t become familiar with yet.

I still have trouble with 1 atmosphere being 101,000 pascals. I thought old Blaise was more of a mathmatician anyway, but I guess he did fool around with vacuums. I’m not sure he feel honored requiring so many of him to fill up a space.

Lithium made motor! That is an interesting concept.
At first sight it would appear a lightweight motor but since Lithium is 5 times less conductive than copper, you would need 5 times thicker wires, so even with the lower density of Lithium that would still make a third the weight of a copper motor.
Unfortunately lithium melt at a much lower temperature so as soon as you would put some amp on it, it would melt down. Unfortunately again, once the Lithium melts down the varnish is not going to isolate it from the air anymore and it is going to go up into flames.
Unless you want to drive a rover on the surface of Titan where a lighter weight motor would be great and the cryogenic temperature places it safe from meltdown, a Lithium motor is not a great idea at all.

Now that we think about it, on Titan it would be more interesting to use a superconductor motor since cryogenic cooling is free. That would be a great adventure in itself by the way. Titan could be much more interesting than Mars after all. 1,6 bar atmosphere, but in the same time, lower gravity so easier to access, free methane for the return ticket. Ice rocks for oxygen extraction. Atmosphere giving plenty of radiation protection. With triple glazing to protect from the cold you could make very simple Earth like greenhouses and grow your tomatoes with some extra pink LED lamps light. The low gravity makes flying inside domes possible as well. The dense atmosphere would also allow the use of dirigibles, helicopters and airplanes. The methane rivers would allow the construction of Hoover dam 2 to produce renewable hydropower or rather methapower electricity.

My guess is the spy shots are mules for testing drivetrain. Similar to the Malibu mules for the Volt drivetrain.

T battery? Really? That means it’s never a full 5 sitter… that’s a deal breaker for a lot of people.

Depends on how big the T is. People have been living with a drive shaft hump in the middle of the floor for a very long time. The battery in the Volt is obviously a bit intrusive, but I would argue there’s still room to put something down the middle of the car without too much of a compromise.

T’ designs do indeed suck. 🙁

I noticed air intakes on the front hood cover-up. That makes no sense.

If it is available like the Soul EV than they should bury the car.

What concerns me is the lack of electrical dominance. 107HP is great for an EV like the LEAF, but this car has to drag along a genset and associated weight. Volt has 149HP to do this and it does it well. The Energi has 91HP, and it’s just unsatisfactory.

The 2012 Ionic concept car is a great looking car. I would buy that if it had a range of 150-200 miles.

The concept was shockingly attractive. The production not so much, assuming this is the production shell and not a mule. On the other hand, the design seems consistent with the limited power.

Likely Hyundai licensed the batter pack technology from GM, which is why the design is similar to what is found in the Volt.

Wait, the production photos and the concept car look like completely different cars! What happened to the 2 gull wing doors? The sleek styling? The cool wheels? Headlights? The production shots look like a 4 door Honda Civic. Yet another car show bait and switch.

The Ioniq needs more than 30 kWh to be competitive. I was hoping for 40 kWh at least.

The second video is the first honest depiction I’ve seen of the toll heating takes on an EV’s range. Mfrs are loathe to discuss this, always describing their EV’s range under optimal conditions.

It gives me some hope that Hyundai’s declared range will be more realistic than Nissan’s.

I guess Hyundai is telling LG Chem, just give me your best design.

LG chem looks around and gave a similar design used in the Volt to Hyundai…

Two battery packs? One under the rear, the other one from the volt. Does anyone else do that? More importantly, what is the benefit??

I too hope the BEV will be minimum 30khw capacity pack.

“IF” it makes it to market, I doubt it will look anything like the concept.

Why tease us?

People here don’t seem to understand the purpose of a concept car. It was 2012, Hyundai probably wasn’t even serious about building electric cars, it just did what all car companies have done since 1939, create a styling exercise that helps introduce future styling gimmicks and brainwash the public into associating the brand with the “future”. Not capable of mass production, not practical to drive. Google some concept cars from the past. A few are close to real cars, many aren’t. You might as well whine that the 1985 Ford Probe V with its .137 drag coefficient looks nothing like a 1988 Ford Probe coupe, which is just a Mazda that Ford came within a hair’s breath of calling a Mustang. The Probe name meant nothing to Ford.

The interior is puke-inducing and the indicators are an abomination!
