Will Horse-Drawn Carriages be Replaced With Old-Fashioned Electric Buggies in NYC?

New York City’s horse-drawn carriages have taken quite a bit of criticism lately.  Animal rights activists feel that the horse are treated improperly and that they should no longer be used as a mode of leisure transport in and around Central Park.

That’s fine by mayor-elect Bill de Blasio, who says he’ll ban NYC’s horse-drawn carriages when sworn into office.

What de Blasio says he’ll do and what actually gets done will depends on the City Council though.  City Council will hold hearings to determine whether or not to ban the horse-drawn carriages.  As of right now, it appears City Council favors keeping the horse-drawn carriages, which have been a symbol of NYC for 155 years.

de Blasio says he has the support of at least 39 city council members, but Christina Hanson of the Horse and Drawn Carriage Association of New York City says City Council is almost unanimously on her side in not banning the horse-drawn carriages.

If the carriages do get banned, then the 200 or operators and 68 carriages will likely be replaced by electric buggies. New Yorkers for Safe, Livable and Clean Streets is promoting the use of its old-fashion looking electric buggy, which makes perfect sense to us.

We’re not going to argue either for or against the horses, but if they do get banned, then obviously an electric replacement is the only way to go.

I’m OK w/the horses as long as they don’t feed them beans.

Good ol’ naturally offset biomethane is safe if you collect it for energy or flare it, hehe.

They should electrify the horse drawn carriage, and just keep the horse for ambiance (and take care of the steering function). He’s just going for a walk in the park that way.

This would be an absolute shame.
