Nissan announced another project with its Glow-in-the-Dark paint and LEAF.

This time it’s a LEAF picture made by artist Ian Cook, of Popbangcolour. Cook used the tires of the LEAF to drive the glow-in-the-dark paint across the surface of the canvas.

The size of the picture (207.68m2) enabled it to capture a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for ‘Largest Glow-in-the-Dark Painting‘.

60 liters of luminous acrylic paint and more than 61 spare hours were needed to achieve the goal.

“The painting, depicting the front of a Nissan LEAF, was created by maverick motoring artist, Ian Cook of Popbangcolour. Usually seen working with radio-controlled cars, Ian was quick to accept Nissan’s challenge to work on this super-sized project, using the full-size Nissan LEAF to spread strategically placed pools of glow-in-the-dark paint across the canvas with its tyres to create the image.

The successful attempt was overseen by an official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS adjudicator Fortuna Burke and awarded the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title on 20 March 2015.”

The painting, which took more than 61 hours to create, has been painted using more than 60 litres of luminous acrylic paint, on a giant PVC coated canvas.

The innovative finish applied to the Nissan LEAF absorbs UV energy and other visible radiation during daylight hours and glows for between eight and ten hours when the sun goes down; making it the ideal tool for the glow-in-the-dark painting.”

“The Nissan-backed painting beats the previous record of 164.6m² (1771.73 ft²) set by Saint Lucas, in Eindhoven, Netherlands, on 23 January 2014.”

Ian Cook said:

“This has been one of the most challenging paintings I’ve ever been asked to create – but it looks fantastic!”

“The full-sized glow-in-the-dark Nissan LEAF is one of the more extraordinary things that I have used as a painting tool.”

the brand takes away some of the arts’ power. I noticed this and I dont really appreciate art all that much

So how environmentally friendly is “glow-in-the-dark” paint?

More importantly, where will it be displayed? Would the art work be visible in daylight, or does it just look like a big patch of off-white? (only to be seen at night?)

Would have been cool if the painting was on roof of Nissan production plant, so could be viewed in a satellite map view on the web. 😉

Personally, I liked some of the early overviews of the incomplete art where full paint wasn’t yet applied. The contrast between light and dark areas made the art painting much more striking. eg: Most striking is the outline sketch at 0:41-0:44 in the video; and later with just LEAF painted on the plate without background color. Sometimes less paint adds to the significance of an art piece.

With the glowing paint some interesting color schemes could be painted on the LEAF.
