BEVs available nationwide

MAY 16 2018 BY MARK KANE 16

Plug-in electric car sales in Germany keep growing – in April some 5,803 passenger cars were registered (up 62% year-over-year).

Market share decreased a little bit compared to previous months and only amounted to around 1.85%.

  • BEVs: 3,172 – up 124% at 1.01% market share
  • PHEVs: 2,632 – up 21% at 0.84% market share

The biggest surprise is that not the new Nissan LEAF, but rather the Kia Soul EV was the star of the month. Some 751 Soul EV were registered, but we suspect that those are in most cases phantom sales (new cars will be exported from Germany to Norway as used, simply to improve average fuel economy within the EU…on paper).

On the other hand, the new LEAF noted just 279 new registrations, after 346 in March. That is less than the 491 BMW i3s (including 96 REx), 456 Volkswagen e-Golf and 422 Renault ZOE.

The new model in Germany is the Jaguar I-PACE – in April the first 31 units were registered.

Tesla delivered 71 Model S and 35 Model X. Sadly, Tesla sales in Germany decreased during the first four months of 2018 – from 1,220 in 2017 to 771 this year.

I can buy a Soul EV in Norway but not in Pennsylvania – grrr.

menorman

They’re available nationwide, so why can’t you buy one in PA?

Will

You can buy in PA but have to get it deliver to PA from Maryland first

I’ve never seen one KIA Soul EV in Germany! They register all the cars in Germany and export them instandly to Norway or the Netherlands. They just need it to get a lower carbon footprint in ther fleet!

Brizzzmeister

True, I have never seen one of those in Germany either.
I guess it is like the article says:
“Some 751 Soul EV were registered, but we suspect that those are in most cases phantom sales (new cars will be exported from Germany to Norway as used, simply to improve average fuel economy within the EU…on paper).”

Oh I actually overlooked this detail in the text. thanks for the hint! I hope I’ll see some KIA EVs next month on my Norway trip.

elbil

There are around 12,000 Kia Soul EVs in Norway, you would be very unlucky if you don’t see any.

CoolHans

I’ve never seen Model S or X in Germany. Those also exported to Norway?

HansNix

No, I don’t think so. Only KIA is doing that as far as I know

Mr. M

I live near Stuttgart and have already Seen 7 Model s and 2 model x. For Kia it makes sense to sell in the EU and resell to norway because of european Co2 quotas. They need a certain level of emissions of all cars sold combined, otherweise they face huge fines.. Tesla has alreday 0 Co2 per Car sold, the calculation to resell makes no sense to Tesla.

You have to look at the slow on the Autobahn. They are normally found hiding behind a lorry saving electricity.

Senna

Pathetic numbers as always

Why Not?

@ Senna. Nothing pathetic about a 62% increase. The German plug-in market is on fire even though most models have many months’ long waiting lists. Can you imagine what would happen if they were not production constrained?

Germany is now the largest plug-in market in Europe (in units sold) and will probably continue to lead, especially once VW and the others bring out their volume models.

The only pathetic numbers are Teslas. Hopefully, that is just because it’s the first month of the quarter. Too bad they can’t ship a few thousand Model 3s there next month. That would really shock the market.
