German Plug-In Electric Vehicle Market Almost Triples In May To 3,843 Sales

JUN 16 2017 BY MARK KANE 11

Germany has become one of the fastest growing plug-in vehicle markets this year, and continued that trend in May with 3,843 new registrations (that’s nearly s 1.2% market share).

2017 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron

Sales for the month almost tripled that of May 2016 (1,380) – up by 178% to be exact:

  • BEVs: 1,520up 159%
  • PHEVs: 2,323up 193%

Among the top selling plug-ins we noted:

  • Audi A3 Sportback e-tron516 (which is 10% of total 5,121 A3)
  • BMW 225xe Active Tourer – 298 (which is 7.3% of total 2-series)
  • BMW i3 – 297 (201 BEV/96 REx)
  • Renault ZOE – 271
  • Tesla Model S – 206 (Tesla Model X stands at 116)
  • Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV – 201 (which is 21.5% of total 935 Outlander).

Also of interest for May, the still very production constrained Hyundai IONIQ electric set its own registrations record at 130 (271 YTD), while the next generation smart ED began to appear in the stats (34 fortwo ED and 5 forfour ED).

Opel Ampera-e? Well, only two new units were registered.

Nice. I suspect that sales will get even better as they create better Germany plug-in cars. This first generation has been underwhelming.

I think all first gen BEVs not named Tesla have been underwhelming…
Gen 2 will be the first cars most anyone could own at a so ewhat reasonable price…

Yay, 1% is achieved!!

You mean the success of Tesla Roadster?
Or Nissan Leaf ? Or is it Renault Zoe? Which one?

I think anyone who bought a BMW 225 never drove the i3, guaranteed. The i3 is a tech showpiece. It puts to shame the 225.

No proper place to put this but I went by FCA headquarters in Auburn Hills, MI the other day. It is now draped in a 10 story high banner featuring the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid saying 83 MPGe ‘believe it’ or something like that. The banner faces The major highway by it (I-75 IIRC).

I’m not a fan of using only MPGe to advertise plug-ins. But it is good to see this laggard company showing off their plug-in so broadly.

Too bad they’re all recalled. But that’s temporary.

Hey Mark,
in the document “fz8” from kba, you can also look for the Streetscooter registrations!

If I read it right it is 72 Vans in May and 0.8% market share (of van market)

Cheers

The author obviously forgot to write that what he shows us from the KBA is just the statistic for cars. But you’re talking about light commercial vehicles (which also includes at least the Kangoo Z.E. with 2 seats).

notting

It is the same document. The screenshot above shows page five of fz8 and the Streetscooter numbers are on page 28.

You can look it up yourself here.

For legal and insurance reasons, the Streetscooter vehicles s are registered as trucks (German LASTKRAFTWAGEN, not to be confused with American trucks), and are thus reported under “semis, busses and others”.
Vans are part of the cars, as would be a pick-up (but one can also register a VW Golf as a “Lastkraftwagen” when the back-seats are removed and the vehicle is solely used for hauling goods.

Me again. Did anyone notice the 20 Audi BEV (“Elektro”)? Those must be testing mules since Audi is not offering any BEVs.

Or it could be new old stock R8 etrón

No, you are right. [1] has the registrations split by model and there are no BEV sales on the R8 but all 20 are on “Sonstige” (=others). And in the months before that, there are 39 more.

I also think that this is a clear hint on the testing vehicles.
